York From Diane Anybody in the York area looking for a good place to have Sunday lunch (or any meal) I can recommend the Three Hares, Bilbrough, York. I booked the day before, told them my dietary problems and they said no problem. They made sure there was an adapted menu and even provided gluten free bread and pasta. From Lynda Another good restaurant is Russells in Coppergate & Stonegate. They do a carvery & even their gravy is gf. www.russells-restaurants.com/ ************************** GF B&B, York Posted on 19/3/2005 GF board My mother-in-law. Pat, has a beautiful bed and breakfast just outside York (it's about 2 miles from the Designer Outlet) and having raised Peter with CD understands all about cross-contamination etc. Pat provides a full GF breakfast, but would need notification at the time of booking. I've posted the website below, hope this is of some use to someone. Look in the "About" section for photographs. Alison Link: www.grimstonhouse.com/ ****************** Can she do both vegetarian and GF, Alison? Yes, Pat says she gets a lot of vegetarians and asks them what they would actually like to have for breakfast, i.e. poached, boiled or scrambled eggs, beans on toast or whatever it is that you prefer to have. She is very accommodating and has separate toasters, chopping boards and preparation areas. It is better for her if you can advise her of any special dietary requirements at the time of booking, telephone number 01904 728328. Please note though, that it is just a B&B and she doesn't do lunches or evening meals etc. although there are plenty of places in York that can cater. Alison ********************* York recommendations Posted by Sue, York on 30/3/2009 …. You could try any of the following:- www.plunkets.co.uk Burgers are GF (still best to check tho but I've had them a few times and always been ok) and so is chilli www.insideyork.co.uk/oscars.html Oscars is fab but gets very busy - the chicken tower without the bun is ok clients.thisisyork.co.uk/luciast ... d_menu.pdf This place has recently opened and I went last week and had the skewers which were lovely but they also do risotto. All three of the above are within a 10-15 minute walk of Grand Opera House. There is also a La Tasca in Swinegate near both Oscars and Lucia but, if you really feel like pushing the boat out you could always go to Betty's! … ************* York recommendations Posted by Sharron M on 30/3/2009 Not been for a while but just checked the website for El-Piano, is vegan, vegetarian and all food is gluten-free. Opens Sunday 12 til 6pm. 15/17 Grape Lane, York YO1 7HU, tel 01904 610676 or www.el-piano.com/ Hope this may be of help ************

Slug & Lettuce Posted by Sue S on GF board 3/5/2004 The Slug & Lettuce - trendy bar in York - has recently been refurbished and their new menu clearly indicates GF dishes - two starters, five main courses and one pud! Not sure if this is part of a national chain but it's a welcome addition to available places to eat in York! www.slugandlettuce.co.uk/home.htm

eating out in York Posted by lolly on 17/7/2004, GF board While on holiday in Scarborough we went to York for a day. Armed with a printout of the list from the GF Map we went looking for the Hole in the Wall Pub, only to be told the chef wasnt there and the girl behind the bar didnt have a clue about what was available. So much for that. we ate at the El Piano who were extremely helpful. They have said that in a few weeks time their full menu will be gluten free. At the mo everything is marked so its easy. (Even tho my 5 year old ate nothing!! as he is a chips and sausages lad! gluten free of course) Us glutens loved the gf meal we had. Would definitely recommend it and if my son every gets adventurous with his eating we may take him back. *************************************** www.elpiano.co.uk/ ...they are also very child friendly .. Phoned ahead to see if they could cope. They told me not to worry and to speak to the waiter when I arrived. I was told I could eat just about everything - they would make the dishes without soy sauce as necessary - and all the battered items were made using potato starch! I've just got back from a week in York . I tried the Pret a Manger in York, expecting the same service as I got in Cambridge. BIG disappointment. " We don't have anything gluten-free'- I was told - "we're not a big enough shop".
I ate three meals at Michael's in Low Petergate with no after effects, the main course selection was good, and cooked to suit if not normally g-f. The sweet selection was virtually nil, though they did get some fruit in specially for me one night to make a salad.

Places to stay in York Posted by Sue S on 19/7/2004GF board If anyone fancies a weekend or longer stay in York, I can recommend a very nice hotel where the owners and chef are very sympathetic to our dietary requirements! The hotel is the Blakeney Hotel in Heworth, a nice suburb of York - about 20 mins walk from the centre of York. The hotel has 17 bedrooms, all ensuite, and family rooms available. One of the members of the York Coeliac Group eats at the hotel regularly and recommended it so some of the other members of the group decided to give it a try last Friday. We had a lovely meal - little touches like gluten free bread made it all the more enjoyable. The owner was very happy for us to publicise the hotel and asks that, if you book a stay with him, please mention that you or someone in your party is a coeliac and they will make all the necessary catering arrangements for you. For prices and further information, contact Tom the owner directly on York (01904)422786 Sue ********************************* www.blakeneyhotel-york.co.uk/

Tullivers of York Posted by Bobby on 24/11/2004 GFboard
If you live in or are visiting York, Tullivers in Colliergate does some interesting gf stuff. It sells all the normal stuff but is more expensive that Holland And Barrett. The good thing is that you can often find something out of the ordinary like quinoa flakes, the gingerbread chocolate biscuits I mentioned in another post or the Nut Feast Eat Natural bars. The only downside of this variety is that it is not very consistent so best not to get hooked on anything as they will probably never have it again!
I've got no connection with the company, I've just been in there a few times and thought it worth a mention.

Bettys Posted by Sue on 28/5/2005 GF board Bettys Cafe, Tea Rooms and Bakery, I went to the one in Northallerton, but they are also in York and Ikley. They provide Gluten free food in their cafe and Gluten Free cakes in their bakery. Have eaten their Chocolate Torte and Chocolate Roulade, absolutely delicous. ******************************* ******** ****************** www.bettysandtaylors.co.uk/ ******* Betty's Posted by Sue, Royal York on 16/6/2005 GF board Hello all - received the following e-mail response from Betty's when I wrote to ask about the GF options:- Dear Sue Sorry for the delay in getting back to you with a list of our Gluten free products but I wanted to be sure that I gave you the correct information. The products that I have listed below do not actively contain Wheat Flour as any part of their ingredients. However they are all made in our Craft Bakery where Wheat Flour is used extensively and is therefore present in the environment. For this reason we cannot guarantee that products will not have come into contact with Wheat Flour. Chocolate Brandy Roulade Almond Macaroons Florentines Medicis Swiss Chocolate Torte Fresh Fruit Pavlova Our Cafe dishes include: Smoked Chicken and Bacon Omelette Prawn Omelette Chicken wrapped in Basil & Air-dried Ham Frittata Rosso Swiss Rosti Warm Lemon Chicken Bowl Pan-fried Salmon Salad Bowl Any member of our Cafe or Shop Team would be happy to go through our range with you and I would advise that you look at the product specification sheets that we keep in our Cafe Tea Rooms if you are at all unsure. A member of our team will be happy to take you through these. I hope that this helps and that you visit Bettys soon, Best wishes Katy Neep ***************** Re: Bettys tearooms .. Posted by John from Somerset on 28/7/2009 I went to Bettys tea rooms in Harrogate last week and they apologised because they "only" had five (yes five) gluten free cakes. Only the sheer cost of them stopped me having one of each. The place is a real treat (get there early to avoid the queues). All their food is made at a bakery in Harrogate so presumably their York branch has the same selection. *********

GF Fish & Chips in York Posted by Suse, York on 23/3/2006
GF board
Hello everyone Just to let you know that Millers Fish & Chip Shop, 79 Main Street, Fulford, York will be using GF batter on the first Weds of every month as follows:-
5 April, 3 May, 7 June, 5 July, 2 August.
Takeaways will be available on these dates between 7 30 pm and 9 30 pm or you can eat in the cafe between 7 30 pm and 8 30 pm.
As a bit of background info, the owners of this shop have been very supportive of the York Group and we have organised many "fish & chip evenings" over the last couple of years. Following a suggestion from us, they have now agreed to provide GF fish & chips on a regular basis, once a month initially to gauge demand.
I'll be there next week!
Suse

As well as Millers, there is a gluten free fish & chips the 1st Tuesday in every month at Mister C' in the centre of Selby. The guy that runs it used to be in charge of the Millers restaurant. Mr C's has won awards for it's fish & chips & the gluten free are just the same. The fish is thick & white & the chips perfect. Having travelled to Millers a few times before I much prefer the Selby takeaway/restaurant. (It also used to do Kids parties, whether they could hold a gluten free one might be worth finding out)

From Suse Las Tasca in Swinegate is ok but probably the best place to try for a romantic (but pricey!) meal is Meltons in Scarcroft Road. Blakeney Hotel is lovely but the dining room is used by the hotel residents so might not be the right place for a "romantic" candle-lit meal. There is a place called Loftsome Bridge Coaching Inn which is about 30 mins drive from York. I have eaten there many times and they have always been very understanding and accommodating of the GF diet. Friday and Saturday evenings are booked up a year in advance but if you stay over, you can get a table in the restaurant. Very nice for a special occasion! York Report Posted by Karen (Essex) on 16/8/2011 GF board .... Tritons fish and chips near York in service area on A64 was excellent. Gluten free fish and chips and several GF puddings (panna cotta, roulade). Several puddings are homemade and change daily. GF bread available. Bar convent was great (but close at 4PM and Sundays). Soup, GF rolls, jackets potatoes, GF sandwiches, other GF stuff, lots of choice for GF cakes (not marked but ask). Bettys had some GF main meals and a GF cake and some GF puddings. No GF bread. Nice atmosphere but a bit pricey. There is an ice cream place and tea room between the Minster and the city wall (on left of Minster) that does ice cream, GF cones, GF bread, GF bagels, GF cake. Only had ice cream on this occasion (and cones had sold out) but advertises GF on board outside and staff told us what they do. ******* Tritons Fish & Chips - Excellent Posted by Joshuas Mummy on 17/8/2011 GF board We've been to Tritons today ... and the customer service and food were excellent. Weekend in York
Posted by janT on 21/11/2011, 19:56:34
Stayed at Marriott near the race course.
At breakfast they provided GF toast, GF sausages as well as pointing out all the other GF food available. Had dinner in the evening - quite a lot of choice. Had lemon sole and chips(cooked separately) and a GF roll. There wasn't a great deal of choice for pudding on the menu but they provided me with a large GF chocolate brownie.
Went to Aunt Betty's for a snack resisted the chocolate cakes on offer and had a delicious home made soup - no bread though! Final meal was at piccolino's. They don't do any GF pasta but had a delicious seafood risotto followed by a creamy panacotta.
It was a great weekend and was pleasantly surprised that everybody I spoke to knew what GF meant and I had no nasty side effects!

Eating out in York' Posted by Yet another Carole on 13/5/2012, 16:58:06 Found a place called Kafeneion in Goodramgate. Has a seperate gf menu. Includes soup, sandwiches, paninis meze and platters. Toasted t cakes scones and cakes. Cream tea, afternoon tea, toasties, quiche and pasties. Phew! Have walked past this place a few times but so glad I looked. Couldn't believe all the choices. 2 drinks, toatie, toasted t cake and honeybun lemon slice came to about £12. Not the cheapest place but not too bad if you only want a snack. www.kafeneion.co.uk/Site/Home.html

gf eating in york Posted by dougjames on 7/10/2012 GF board had an idea of where to eat in york but as the city was full to bursting was delighted to have an excellent and relaxed meal at the deancourt hotel. Service was very friendly and their fish and chips (with home made tartare sauce) and mushy peas was excellent. Lots of other gf goodies on their menu at all times. Their on-line menus don't include all their offerings so do frop i if you're in town www.deancourt-york.co.uk/restaurants/dch.asp

The Blind Swine - York Posted by Leanne on 19/11/2012 GF board Have been here 3 times now and its absolutely brilliant. The only place i've ever eaten out and not felt like i'm a hassle to the staff. Its a wonderful experience! They tweaked all my food so it was gluten free and I even got 2 freshly made bread rolls when everyone else had their bread they were amazing. www.facebook.com/theblindswine
