We are just back from Amsterdam. We were stopping in the Old South area near the Van Gogh Museum. While we did not find anywhere with a gluten-free menu most of the restaurants said they were familiar with gf requirements and adapted dishes or said some were unsuitable. We had some delicious salads, much more imaginative than we would get in London. As the guide books say, there was bread with everything as well as crutons in most of the salads unless you made the point you didn't want any. Still, a good time to visit the city because the weather kept hoards of tourists away.

Handy snack Posted by Colin (London) on 28/12/2011

While in Amsterdam recently I found a useful snack among the Schar products in the big A and H supermarket under Museumplein - small packets of crackers. They were in packs of three banded together for 4.50 euros. They tasted a bit salty but were convenient to take around with you, it's usually bread with everything in Holland.

...my wife and I spent a week in Amsterdam recently and I didn't have any problems eating out. I took mueseli and some bread with me but ended up eating what was available for breakfast like fruit salad, ham, cheese, etc. Most of the restaurants understood about coelaki (I think that's the spelling) and either knew or could adapt meals, in others it was a case of choosing what I knew I could eat like salads, omelette, steak, etc. ...
... there is bread with everything and many lunchtime snacks are bread-based in some way, you have to be prepared for that and obviously choose something else. They also seemed incapable of serving a salad without croutons so you need to specify that if appropriate. The A&H chain of supermarkets (in Amsterdam) had a good selection of Scharr products. There is usually a good selection of fish dishes. There are lots of beers which, sadly, we can't have but we had some delicious wines. Most people speak excellent English. ...

Gluten Free Amsterdam - Posted by Audrey on 3/11/2012 GF board Haven't been to Amsterdam since being diagnosed, so these are not personal recommendations.....! glutenfreeglobetrotter.com/2012/05/03/gluten-free-in-amsterdam/ The above site has some tips – but don’t get too excited by Bakkerij Visser / ‘t Stoepje (Bakery), because if you read Kristen’s Blog (click link on page) you will see all they had was frozen gluten free bread. Then there is this site www.celiacchicks.com/restaurants/amsterdam/glutenfree-amsterdam-part-one.html and this one gonegluten-free.com/2011/08/21/gone-gluten-free-has-gone-to-europe-amsterdam/ Below posted online by Paula Tienza: The best restaurant was Haesje Claes (see link below). This is the only one I found on the internet and is listed in the Coeliac UK directory too. They have a proper gluten-free menu. It is a traditional restaurant with traditional home-made food. It is pricey but definitely worthy. My lunch – lovely calf’s liver with apple, mash and bacon. And gluten-free bread! Yum! And the service was quite good too. www.haesjeclaes.nl/?language=en_EN From: www.tripadvisor.com.au/ShowTopic-g188590-i60-k5109460-Gluten_free-Amsterdam_North_Holland_Province.html The following are all in the centre of Amsterdam: De Drie Vrienden (French/Dutch), Brasserie Harkema (Dutch), Haesje Claes (Dutch), Selecta (Indonesian), Lieve (Dutch), La Margarita (Mexican), and Rose's Cantina (Mexican/South American). A review from TripAdvisor: “I love you, Piqniq! (Gluten-free bread!)” (Jordaan area) Reviewed 31 May 2012 We were lucky enough to stumble in here after a long train ride. We met the wonderful owner who made us a yummy breakfast and she even had a delicious gluten-free roll for my "special" dietary needs! She said she could make sandwiches with it, too. The atmosphere is really charming. I'm so happy we're staying around the corner. I imagine it's perfect for a quick coffee and treat, too. www.lunchcafepiqniq.nl/main/ Another review from TripAdvisor: Restaurant d'Vijff Vlieghen, Spuistraat 294-302, Amsterdam 1012VX (Dam Square) www.thefiveflies.com/en/home “Great job at accommodating gluten-free!” Reviewed 10 September 2012 I was with a group of 6 and had the 5 course meal. The food was tasty and unique, the atmosphere very old Dutch and as such, charming and interesting for a Canadian. Service was excellent. What I would really like to comment on was the very professional and discrete way they handled my request for a gluten-free meal. I wasn't familiar with this restaurant and wasn't part of making the reservation, so was "going in cold". When I discovered that it is a fixed menu, I was a little worried, and also, being with a group of 6. I didn't want it my gluten-free requirements to impact the group. As soon as I mentioned to the serving staff that I would like to eat gluten-free they discreetly assured me that it would be no problem.....and it wasn't at all. For every course that was delivered they either provided me with a delicious alternative or assured me that that course was gluten-free. They even presented me with a cute little loaf of warm gluten-free bread at the beginning of the meal that was BY FAR the best gluten-free bread I've ever tasted. Kudos to this restaurant for a wonderful experience!
From: Website of Brasserie De Poort, Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal 176-180, 1012 SJ Amsterdam (see link below): We can also provide lunch or dinner dishes and high teas to fit a gluten-free diet. Please indicate your request when you make your reservation. www.dieportvancleve.com/lang-en/brasserie-de-poort
Review translated from the Dutch (via Google Translate) about Brasserie Harkema: www.brasserieharkema.nl/?lang=en Have eaten here yesterday (date unknown) delicious gluten free. A special gluten free menu and also gluten free bread in house. For 25 Euros per person including a glass of wine and coffee. A must if you want to eat in the heart of Amsterdam Centre. Booking essential.
Review from Yelp: www.mexican.nl Restaurant La Margarita, Langebrugsteeg 6, 1012 GB Amsterdam Tel: 020-6240529
La Margarita is a fab little Mexican restaurant near UVA. Its colourful window with floating fish caught our eye and we decided to return the following night.
There is a three course menu offer for around 20 euros but being a nacho aficionado, I had to sample them here. There was plenty of choice so I opted for chicken and chorizo and it was a huge portion so I was in pig heaven and the homemade guacamole was delish! Dessert wasn't really required but we couldn't resist and my Dama Blanca was ace - gorgeous ice cream which brought back memories of Mr Whippy.
On a sunny night, this is a great spot if you can grab a table on the terrace and watch the various boats sailing along the canal below. Well worth a visit for great food in lovely surroundings. Service was friendly and although Dutch menus in the restaurants don't tend to be marked gluten free, my order was marked gluten free for the kitchen and I had no issues after eating.

AmsterdamPosted by tigermilk on 13/9/2013 GF board I've always had a great time in Amsterdam, it's not the best in terms of stocking of gluten free products, but pretty much everyone speaks perfect English and people are generally happy to help and accomodate. This Dutch person has written a very helpful guide: www.celiac.com/gluten-free/topic/87401-celiac-disease-in-the-netherlands/

Great trip to Amsterdam Posted by Amanda (Yorkshire) on 16/8/2014 GF board Just had a great trip to Amsterdam. We ate out at the following places, both of which were really gf aware: www.pancakesamsterdam.com/en and www.stedelijk.nl/en/visit-us/restaurant-stedelijk Also found the food labelling fantastic, with lots of items labelled gf at the Albert Heijn supermarkets, plus gf bread etc available
