Re: Holland Posted by Karen (Rugeley) on 11/5/2008 GF board
... recently spent a few days in and around Amsterdam. I took with me the restaurant cards, printed in dutch (well you would wouldn't you) At the first restaurant I visited for a lunch time meal, I presented the card to the waiter, who said his mother was English, his father was Scottish and he was born and raised in Israel and he couldn't read a word of dutch. So I asked him if he could pass it to the chef and he told me that the chef was from Brazil! In the end I managed to find out that the tomato soup was gf.
The hotel I stayed at was part of the Golden Tulip chain and I had varying degrees of success, for our evening meals. But on the whole I managed OK.
I think the thing to remember is that cities are becoming more and more cosmopolitan and just because we visit a foreign country, doesn't mean that everyone there speaks (or reads) the native tongue!
I took my own bread, cereals (although I didn't need the cereals as the buffet breakfast was very good). I also took nibbly things in case I got hungry during the day. ****************
