Posted by Claire (Oxford/Manchester) on GF board, 6/9/2003, First a disclaimer - I've never had a gluten reaction that I'm aware of (diagnosed on mild symptoms + family history) so I can't vouch absolutely for lack of cross-contamination etc. Having got that out the way... Last night my boyfriend and I went to Da Mario, which is a family run Italian in the Covent Garden area. I'd read in a review of the restaurant on www.london-eating.co.uk/ that they did GF pasta, but the reviewer didn't demonstrate any understanding of what this is or whether the restaurant is generally good for coeliacs, so I phoned beforehand to check everything out. The lady I spoke to was very friendly. I asked about cross-contmaination and she said that the pasta would be boiled in a separate pan with separate water etc. She wrote down next to the booking that I was GF and asked me to remind her when I got there. She also said she could advise on dishes etc. We got there and I attempted to choose dishes. When we came to order, she was helpful in advising me about what to have. I had chosen a sauce involving cream but she said that with the GF pasta this could get a bit gloopy and not very nice, so it would be better to have an olive-oil or tomatato based sauce. My view was that the food was nice but nothing amazing (I had a pasta starter, then chicken fillets), but I think my boyfriend thought it was very nice. They didn't seem the most clued-up people about GF (they asked me whether the parmesan would be okay - I decided to leave it for that night, because I couldn't be bothered to work out if it had come into contact with any wheat at any time; also at one point they thought myself and my boyfriend both wanted GF food (it might be called a disease sometimes, but it's not contagious!)), but they were very friendly and prepared to listen and obviously wanted to be helpful. And having said the stuff about not being the most clued-up people on GF, the lady did say that she would make sure the chef didn't use any flour to dust the chicken or anything. The restaurant itself was small and pleasant. It came to £40 for two of us having two courses (starter and main), and a 0.5l bottle of wine, which we thought was pretty decent. Given that the other places we've tried in London have been a veggie place (which was nice, but which my boyfriend wouldn't put up with too often) and Wagamana (which is good for what it is but not the place for a relaxed (/romantic) evening), Da Mario has become our default safe option in London. ******************** London visit Posted by Vee on 1/5/2006 ....We finally booked into Da Mario's and it was excellent! I chose Mediterranean vegetables with goats cheese as a starter and linguini with a Bolognaise sauce for the main course. Sadly, I didn't have time to test the creme brulee as we were off to the theatre. The boards, both inside and out, advertise gluten-free pasta (penne being the other choice) but they would have made gluten-free sauces if I had chosen something else instead of pasta. I would highly recommend it....

Saw this on the other restuarant list and it reminded me that I had lunch there a year or so ago - very good meal and understanding proprietor who was disappointed that I hadn't got room for his GF chocolate cake. Its on the road just east of the main piazza. PJ's Grill (Covent Garden) 30 Wellington Street, London, WC2E Tel: 020 7240 7529 Fax: 020 7379 5025 Nearly all main courses gluten free, and Gluten free chocolate cake on the menu for afters. from Val on GF board *************************************************** PJ's is excellent. One of our party of 3 is particularly sensitive to wheat & gluten and because of previous problems elsewhere is very aprehensive when eating out. The waiting staff were patient, knowledgable and very professional. The food was great & the atmosphere 1st class. We'll be going back as soon as we can. How refreshing to find somewhere that knew all the concerns and didn't try to offer something he couldn't have. Came up with rice cakes when we had the bread rolls, offered him the 3 GF alternatives from the kids menu and then the desserts to follow. I didn't have to say anything other than that he needed GF when I booked the table. They also made a real fuss of him and made it a nice treat. The food was lovely - he had a burger with home made chips followed by choc ice cream. So if you are ever there, do give it a go. ********************************** PJ's Grill London Posted by Fiona on 26/9/2004, 10:25 pm 62.252.64.16 Thank you to who ever it was that put this place on the Supp Board. I and my friends had the most wonderful dinner here and they knew exactly what I could have and our waitor pointed out on the menu what was gluten free and what could be made gluten free. I played safe and stuck to pan fried salmon with pesto rice and for dessert I had a choice of three items that were on the menu, ice cream, creme brulee or flourless chocolate cake, naturally I had the chocolate cake, it was divine. I will definitely be going back here when next in London. *****************************************

Neal's Yard, Covent Garden Not sure of exact address sorry
This is a cafe/restaurant with a take away deli. Everything is labelled either GF or WF both at the deli and on the menu and everything is delicious. Lovely soups, pies (yes pies!), cakes, muffins and loads of tasty breads. Highly recommended

GF board
Before my day trip to London the other day I found I tiny post on the Supp Board about a place called Neal's Yard near Covent Garden, with no address. However the post mentioned gluten free bread and pies and said there was a choice! I went there and it was amazing!
Its a Vegan and Vegetarian community and is amazing - I counted 7 different types of gluten free bread! And its a lovely atmosphere too.
Just wanted to add the address:

I can recommend Wagamama for excellent (vegetarian) GF meal.
We went there early one evening (without booking, just came across this Japanese restaurant) & I explained I was a vegetarian coeliac , asked if I could have meal there. Ate one of their vegetarian dishes which had various stir-fry type vegetables including pak choi & also tofu with rice noodles & delicious soup-like sauce tasting of creamed coconut.
The non-veggie non-coeliac had a rice & chicken dish which probably was GF- or could be made so as everything is prepared fresh ( kitchen is in full view & they seemed very busy all the time cooking ). The restaurant in Covent Garden is downstairs in a canteen-like place with mostly refectory type tables & so can cater for groups. Non-smoking throughout . Sadly, the 2 puddings which I could have eaten were all gone but we were very full from main course & snow peas (sort of starter/side dish ) anyway.

PJ's Restauraunt & Biggles sausages Posted by janice on 28/8/2005 went to London yesterday armed with my list of places to eat that I had printed out from the map page. I had decided on PJ's restaurant at Covent Garden. We found it but the menu in the window didn't say anything about Gluten free and nearly all the meals came with a sauce or dressing so I wasn't too sure, so we decided to go in for a drink and we would ask and I decide after that. To my great surprise nearly everything is GF, the owner himself came to talk to me, all their sauces are GF the only things I couldn't have were the pasta and the battered things. They have been doing GF foods for over 10 years and what I liked even more than the food which was FANTASTIC was that he took this opportunity to teach some of his new staff about GF and what it meant for them and the customer. so I had a wonderful meal including chips for the first time in 3 months because he assured me that they make them themselves and they have a separate fryer just for the chips. Although I was pretty full after my main course and side serving of fries I just had to have the flourless chocolate cake just because I could! and it was loverly. there is no way I would have believed it was GF if they hadn't reassured me that it really was. the staff were very friendly and couldn't do enough for me including providing me with rice cakes instead of the bread, I don't really like rice cakes but it so nice that they had bothered to make the effort that I ate them and enjoyed them. It's very comfortable and nice and quiet not loud and touristy like you might expect for Covent Garden they also have live music in the evenings and it is very reasonably priced for London. If you are ever in London and near Covent Garden it is well worth a visit at any time of day. PJ'S Bar and Restaurant 30 wellington Street Covent Garden London WC2E 7BD 02072407529 we also went to visit Biggles Gourmet Sausages whilst we were in London. These were listed on last months addition list. It's a funny little shop in a side street but the choice is fantastic, it was so hard to decided on which ones to have. we ended up with 3 different types. haven't tried any yet will try some tonight but the look and smell fantastic. the leaflet I picked up says they do mail orders so it might be worth checking out if you can't get to London. The staff actually recognise when I go in with my friends now and don't bother to offer me the bread basket, they take my plate away and replace it with rice cakes which I tihnk is lovely. Even when full I still manage to eat the chocolate cake because I can!!! catering Posted by suzy45 on 9/5/2009 Reading all these interesting messages about the successes and failures of company catering made me want to sing the praises of the City Lit, which is a wonderful adult education centre in central London. Their (franchised) cafe offers two hot meals every day and the menu on the counter states clearly for each one whether it contains dairy or wheat. One or other option is always free of both. Needless to say every dish and side order has its own spoon and the staff are very careful to use the proper one. Such a good example! From Betty, on ‘Gluten Free London’ blog. …I've only been living in London for the last three months, so this may be old news, but maybe this could help out the Americans as well (particularly in touristy areas): -"Leon" (healthy fast food) is amazing, clearly labelled, lots to choose from www.leonrestaurants.co.uk-"Muffinski's" on King St right near Covent Garden has some nice GF muffins, and frozen yoghurt. .... -"PJ's" on Wellington St, just up the road from the Lyceum Theatre, has GF items marked on the menu, and the richest flourless chocolate cake you'll ever have. -"Porters" English Restaurant on Henrietta St, also just near Covent Garden, has a good special GF menu, just ask. -At Camden Markets, there's a Venezuelan food stand that does GF burger type things that are just awesome. It's in the Lock courtyard with the rest of the food on weekends, and all of the fillings (and buns) are GF except for the chicken one. It's also right near a fudge stand where all but two of the fudges are GF. -Right across the road from Camden Lock is "inSpiral", which has a variety of vegetarian/vegan food. I believe a lot of it is GF, but I've only ever had the ice cream there, which is AMAZING! It's made from cashew nuts!! It's everything-free: gluten, wheat, dairy, sugar. But it still tastes good. www.inspiralled.net might have more info on the actual food. -"beatroot", on Berwick St in Soho is all vegetarian too, and a lot of GF stuff, just maybe stay away from the vegetables that look to have a questionable soy-looking-sauce... I think it might have made me a bit sick one time, but everything else there was good. -"Yo! Sushi". I've only been to the one at Harrods102 (right across the street from Harrods), but they have an allergen list that you can flick through. The marinated salmon with dill is incredible. In fact, here's the list: www.yosushi.com/static/downloads ... ooklet.pdf … Also, there's this: www.lookwhatwefound.co.ukThe bolognese is genius, and the meatballs, oy. Majority of products are gluten free, and delicious. …. ****************** GF in London Posted by Paul in Madrid on 6/3/2010 Gf board We were there last weekend, here's my crib list: Mrs Marengo's cake shop . 53 Lexington Street London W1F 9AS Curzon Soho Café 99 Shaftesbury Avenue London W1D 5DY Cotto Italian Restaurant - Bar, Pizzeria and Restaurant - 89 Westminster Bridge Road, Waterloo, London, SE1 7HR Muffinski's 5 King Street, Covent Garden PJ’s Covent Garen 30 WELLINGTON STREET, LONDON, WC2 7BD De Mario restaurant 63 Endell St, Covent Garden The Mermaid's Tail, 7 Leicester Square, London ****************************************** Re: GF in London Posted by Louise on 7/3/2010 GF board I ate in PJs grill recently and it was great! I indulged in a trip to the Sanctuary Spa today and was really touched by the efforts staff made to ensure I had tasty GF food. The lady who took the booking had made a note on the computer and advised me about items on the menu today. The highlight was GF scones with jam and cream in the lounge overlooking the pool The Sanctuary Spa, Covent Garden....
