Eating out in London (with kids)
We are thinking of taking the kids to London during the Easter school holidays (ages 3 and 7) - the 3 year old has CD - and wondered if anyone knew of a suitable place (with gluten free food to eat) with kids? Of course, we could do McD's without the bun! but thought there must be other possibilities in the capital, surely???!
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The Tate gallery always seems to have a gf cake on offer
We have been to a number of Italian restaurants that have good risottos, virtually all the indians are okay etc. There is also the Texas Embassy in Trafalgar squarew - tex mex. You can specifically ask for corn tortillas to have fajitas and their corn chips are also fine. It has a good atmosphere for both couples, groups and families.
If you venture out as far as Kingston their is the Riverside Vegetaria that lables food GF or in Richmond the Harvest Restaurant also labels well

We found Est Est Est (there are four in London, we went to Upper St) to be helpful - they topped a GF pizza for us, and understood the contamination issues - and very child friendly (crayons to draw on the tablecloth, balloons).

......., we wanted to try another place in London. Da Mario's isn't open so I looked on the supp board for another idea and came up with Est Est Est. The message said they would top a GF pizza but the guy on the phone said not. Any one had experience of this place?

The Est Est Est in Upper Street, Islington topped a GF pizza for my daughter last summer without any problem ... and we hadn't warned them in advance.

When they top a pizza, how do you know it isn't getting contaminated in the Kitchen with all the flour that's wafting around? And aren't the pizzas cooked on flat stone - impossible to keep clean!!! How do you avoid contamination??

It's a good question Anna ..
The places where we've topped a GF pizza have had separate baking trays, so we've not been directly onto the same surface. I know in Safeways they cook directly on the semolina-floured surface, so we've not done that.
Apart from that, it is a gamble. B has shown no signs of internal distress after the (very few) times we've tried it, and I think the social benefit for her has outweighed the risk. But I don't think she is very sensitive at all, and I know not everyone is in that position - so you are right to point out the risks.

what a shame you didn't try the Natural history Museum itself, Jules. I went there in Nov and they were fabulous with me. The chef made me my own chicken salad with its own dressing. he had had sausages earlier but there were none left at three o'clock when I wandered in for my food

Kingston & Putney

I live in Kingston and use to work in Putney. The large Sainsburys in Kingston has a good range of gluten free food, including the freezer stuff. The Sainsbury's central in town obviously has less. Putney is okay but smaller site so less choice. If you're looking to eat out in the area then:
Riverside Vegetaria, Kingston labels which items are gluten free and not and is excellent food. Will need to book though particularly at weekends.
La Tasca, Kingston - tapas/spanish - labels menu GF.
Loads of lovely indian restaurants.
Destinos, Upper Richmond Road, Putney - tapas - i have always founds them helpful re gluten and good food.
