Hi David
It's been a while since I've been on the message board, however, I've noticed you've put a few entries on regarding restaurants in Northern Ireland. Just to let you know of a few others which I would recommend.
Benedicts, Shaftesbury Square, Belfast Bar Retro & The Plough, Hillsborough The Pheasant, Annahilt The Bahina Place, Moira (chinese restaurant) Ginger, just off Great Victoria Street, Belfast The Apartment, Donegall Square West, Belfast
Have enjoyed fab food at all of the above without suffering any consequences.vee Posts: 72 Joined: Mon Aug 19, 2002 7:06 pm Location: Durham Private messageE-mail vee

Cayenne 7 Ascot House Shaftesbury Square Belfast, BT2 7BD
Ate at Paul Rankin's restaurant Cayenne in March 2008, it is listed as a Ceoliac friendly restaurant. Had a great meal, when informed that I needed gf food the waiter pointed out every dish that I could eat, those that could be adapted and those that couldn't, even knowing that the soy sauce was a problem. In fact most of the dishes are gf and hey do not use wheat flour in any souces. Not cheap but I thought good value for the quality, £95 for two, three courses each with a drink, one bottle of wine and a glas of dessert wine each. Well worth a return visit and Belfast is a great city.

Sun Nov 23, 2003 5:48 pm The Nutmeg 9 Lombard Street Belfast 249984 Organic foods, gluten free www.happycow.net/europe/northern ... d/belfast/ *********************************** Avoca cafe Belfast Posted by davidmc on 20/11/2008 GF board For those from NI or visiting Belfast there is late night shopping on thursday nights. The Avoca shop in Arthur St has a cafe which serves really delicious GF food. I had lovely chicken breast in a rich bourguinon sauce on a bed of celeriac mash followed by a huge creme brulee with assorted berries instead of ginger biscuits. The whole thing was delightful and the local staff very knowledgeable and accommodating. You may need to discuss your dietary needs with the local staff. Staff who are not local are helpful but I was not convinced that they understood my needs fully. You can also get GF food during the day. They stock their own GF bread in the cafe and sell it in the shop. There is a quick serve light snack area too and some of the food there is GF if you ask. Several wonderful veggie options too though the ones I saw came with non GF bread which could be changed for GF. Highly recommended and well worth a visit. Spotless toilets create confidence too. .... 10 Bedford St Belfast, BT2 7FB 028 90326601 **************************** Getting a positive response to emailing restaurants about GF experiences. Posted by Davidmc on 25/8/2009, 22:18:26 62.190.233.X I wrote to Botanic Inns group in Belfast after eating at one of their outlets in Belfast (Apartment) some of www.botanicinns.com/index.aspwhich cater for gluten free. I enjoyed my meal but noted some gaps in chef knowledge about GF such as frying in the same oil as gluten products and use of soy sauce, common gaps in knowledge about our diet. The managing director replied personally and thanked me for my email and took the step of forwarding it to all of the head chefs in the group's restaurants to ensure that they were aware of the issues and passed them on to their chefs. My email was constructive and encouraging of their attempts to cater for us as well as reminding them that we are a sizeable customer group allied to our families and friends who have to dine where we do. This is probably the best way forward in encouraging a good response from caterers. **********************

Try the 'Kings Head' on the Upper Lisburn Road which have a gluten free selection on their menu. Also,'Benedicts' at Shaftsbury Square who are very helpful and have prepared gluten free sauces for me in the past. ........................................................................................ davidmc
You have a choice of three places in the Odyssey entertainment arena which is quite close to the centre, say a ten minute walk or very short drive. Easy to find too as it is on the riverside. There you can go GF in the excellent Indian Ocean, the spanish tapas bar La Tasca and the chinese Red Panda restaurant. I have eaten in all three and have had no problems. There is Paul Rankin's slightly more upmarket restaurant Cayenne, which you can look up online. It is central and very close to Jury's too. The menu for it looks promising and I am sure they could easily make you something suitable. The Europa hotel is next door to your hotel. They might well be able to come up with something. There is another branch of the Red Panda chinese restaurant in Gt Victoria St only about 300 yds from your hotel and basically on the same street but other side if you go right from your hotel front. Someone recommended the Conor restaurant opposite the museum left just past Queen's university(about a mile away). You can often get GF soup in Rankin's bistro in Arthur St - 500 yds from your hotel. Beware the flourless cake as they serve it with the same server as the other cakes. Even closer is M&S cafe revive in Donegall Place in front of the City Hall where you can get basic GF items like baked potato, soups, muffins etc. There is a branch of Spud-u-like in the Castlecourt centre in Royal Avenue and they have some GF stuff. Opposite is another Rankins, not the big one but the smaller stand where they tell me that they have GF soup. I haven't tried it yet but I see on the Supp board that the Silver Leaf cafe at 15 Belmont Rd( 10-15 mins by car) will make GF fish and chips if contacted in advance on 90471164 (no area code needed when there) I really want to try this myself and aim to contact them sometime soon. Have a great time. By the way if you get up to the north coast(1hr by car) where I live there are several good places I have put on the supp board with Gf food, some with a Gf menu.

Gf board
... I tried Cafe Renoir in Queen Street and I had a great meal(have put this place on the GF map). It was a spicy chicken mexican wrap minus the wrap but with extra rice. I chose more rice rather than more salad. Other meals could be adapted by the chef and the serving staff seemed to have a good basic grasp of my needs I didn't eat the GF florentines on offer as they were stacked at the opposite end of the same container as shortbread. Risky. I had no after effects and really enjoyed the meal which was generous by any standard for the price.

Belfast Market Posted by Stephen on 1/10/2005
GF board
For those of you close enough to St Georges market in Belfast on a Saturday morning, there is a stand selling gluten free seeded bread, pancakes, potato bread and apple potato bread. You order one Saturday for collection the next, although they usually have a few extra for sale to those who have not ordered. I would recommend them.

Is this a record? Posted by davidmc on 22/5/2006 GF board I visited the Odyssey entertainment complex in Belfast yesterday to find that a new food outlet, Bennetts, offers GF fare. The chef was really helpful and came out to talk to me, telling me that she has a coeliac friend who persuaded her to install a dedicated fryer in the kitchen. She went through the entire menu advising me on what I could eat and after the meal gave my wife a 15% off voucher with her name and the place's phone number on it to ring if I wanted to check anything in the future. This complex is a mecca for coeliacs with four restaurants and one coffee shop providing GF food in the space of a hundred metres. Two have GF menus. This must be a record unless of course you know better? www.viewbelfast.co.uk/restaurants/bennetts-info-41489.html

Botanic Inns Belfast Posted by davidmc on 22/7/2006 GF board This UK public house group comprises some 14 or so pubs and restaurants in the Belfast area. I ate in one today, the King's Head on the Lisburn Road where there were items marked Gf on the menu. I have been checking out the website for the company and from there the various outlets. Many of them indicate if a meal choice contains gluten though several of them use the colour coding about gluten in different ways which is confusing. Still it is a start. There are a few errors which need addressed but it is a step in the right direction and I have emailed the company to congratulate them. The different places and menus can be accessed from the link. If this company can be persuaded to improve further on providing a service to coeliacs this means more choice for coeliacs in the Belfast area. Posted by davidmc on 14/6/2011, 22:58:57 I ate in Nick's Warehouse in Hill Street in central Belfast on saturday and had a lovely meal. The staff were GF aware and very helpful. The food was delicious and you can have dessert too. www.nickswarehouse.co.uk/Nick's Warehouse Posted by davidmc on 30/11/2011, 16:55:16 62.190.233.x I highly recommend Nick's Warehouse in Hill St in central Blefast to any coeliacs who live in or visit Northern Ireland. Prior to joining the main trade union strike rally in Belfast City centre I ate here. The ambience and food are excellent and they cater well for coeliacs. There is no specific GF menu but the helpful and friendly staff will give you one with the GF meals highlighted if you ask. To my surprise I was provided with a little home made gluten free bread roll with my meal. It was flavoured and had a good texture and was great to mop up my casserole sauce with. A nice touch. The owner, Nick himself, is in evidence and seems to be relate well to his customers. www.nickswarehouse.co.uk/menu.php?id=64

222 Newtonards Road, Belfast. Fantastic chippy called New Titanic Restaurant. It's run by Stuart and Kate. Gluten free and wheat free battered cod. GF/WF chips from a dedicated fryer. onion rings and mushrooms all battered and pasties too (like a cheese and mashed potato in batter). Even their gravy is GF/WF. They are really used to Coeliacs and were aware of contamination and even have dedicated kitchen tools so they don't cross contaminate... They made me feel really welcome. Their number is 02890 459383 They've won awards and i can't recommend them highly enough. Here's a link: www.newtitanicrestaurant.co.uk/

Mr JD's New Titanic Restaurant Belfast - the ultimate GF fish and chip shop. Posted by David mc on 6/4/2013, 22:21:33 Cassie recommended this place and posted it on the Supp Board for good reason. It is unrivalled in my experience in offering a full gluten free menu as well as being great value. I finally got there today way too long after Cassie's recommendation. Verdict? Fantastic, lovely staff, up to speed on our needs and the food is marvellous as well as available every day all day. I was worried that the problems with the serious disorder and flag protests in the immediate area might destroy the business but things have calmed down remarkably and they are still in business. I had a massive portion of battered cod and chips with tartare sauce and a pot of tea for £6.50, an absolute bargain. They even gave me a great free pasty as I had travelled 60 miles to eat there. All GF food is prepared safely and they use a dedicated GF frier. Cassie, sorry I didn't get the chance to meet up while you were here. Just couldn't make it. The staff told me that you have left. Wherever you are I wish you well and I am sure that you are missing this little gem in Belfast. www.newtitanicrestaurant.co.uk/

Belfast and surrounds Taste of UlsterPosted by David mc on 4/8/2013 GF board This guide is for food outlets recommended by the Taste of Ulster guide. This is generally a good guide to quality and service. Scrolling through shows which places highlight gluten free as something that they offer. Note regarding the Kings Head on the Lisburn Road, this is generally known as a place to get gluten free food. I haven't been in a while but it's worth checking out. www.nigoodfood.com/Belfast%20-%20Taste%20of%20Ulster%20Guide.pdf

Benedicts Hotel, Belfast - One for the Supp Posted by Adrian on 25/11/2013, 8:49:51 194.82.210.x Hi All, Just wanted to let you all know of a great hotel in Belfast should you ever (and you really must, because it's fab) have a need to stay there. Benedicts hotel could not do enough for my wife, nothing was too much bother. When the waiter came up I said my wife had coeliac and his instant response was "we can cater for a gluten free diet, that won't be an issue". A waiter/waitress putting coeliac and Gluten free together always bodes well. Anyway, they ordered her in GF sausages for breakfast, adapted sauces for dinner, room service and even breakfast. Tammy fanied Eggs benedict and they made the sauce from scratch and even chucked on a couple of GF sausages for good measure. She wasn't ill all weekened and we had a fab time too! Full marks to the Benedict! www.benedictshotel.co.uk/
