Out and Out restaurants
From GF board
An interesting experience in the Ock Mill restaurant, Marcham Road, Abingdon: this is an Out and Out restaurant next to the Travel Inn ( www.eatingoutandout.co.uk/ ).
They cover themselves legally, but in our case it was all up front and I applaud them for that.
We arrived Sunday lunchtime on a whim (it being Father's Day and all). It was William aged 4 who advised the staff that I was coeliac(!). The staff looked for and failed to find their coeliac menu - however, I was given their allergy list. This is a folder of detailed information on all their dishes, giving a breakdown of every ingredient as regards a variety of allergies and intolerances.
It has to be said that it took me about 10 minutes to plough through the list and identify what I wanted against the menu. It also has to be said that there were two categories in the column for gluten, either 'yes' - contains gluten - or 'n/i' - no information, in other words they couldn't vouch for it, and you continued at your own risk. however, nothing was too much trouble, and my steak was excellent. Also the kids cleared their plates, and had icecream (and had to be stopped from licking out the bowl) - which is some kind of endorsement.
The detail supplied was commendable if a little overwhelming (!)
Although I've quoted the web address above, there is no dietary information there, but they'd be worth 'phoning if you were intending to visit.

I'd like to endorse that comment - I stumbled across an Out & Out pub restaurant last year. As Steve implied, they have a specific Gluten free menu, so (assuming they can find it!), there is no need to wade through the usual 30 page tiny font allergy listings to try and find something. It's also quite an invigorating experience to be able to do what "normal" people do and just look at a menu!
