I booked into the Kensington Hilton for our visit to London last weekend and was disappointed when there was no gluten-free bread for my breakfast. I’d been assured when I booked the week before, and again when I booked in on arrival, that they could cater for me. However, the chef did make sure that my eggs and bacon were cooked safely. It’s not the same without bread though, is it? You can’t put marmalade on bacon, can you?
Staff were apologetic, especially when bread they’d ordered for the second day didn’t arrive. I’d have gone to M&S for croissants and bread myself if I’d had the time!
HOWEVER, and this is a big however, we had a chat about possible ways to overcome this happening to anyone else and I suggested that, as the bread is long-life, it could be stored in one of the hotels or even frozen. I also mentioned that croissants could be obtained from M&S – other guests have a range of choices, why can’t we?
Today I had a phone call from the hotel manager and my suggestions are being taken seriously. They have been in touch with their suppliers and now know that they can get bread to freeze and are making it a policy throughout the Hilton Group to have supplies more readily available.
I also suggested it would be helpful if their menus had ‘we cater for special diets’ or something similar, or perhaps had gf noted against food we can eat. I told her that in Durham, Oldfields Restaurant have actually gone through their menu, highlighted what IS gluten-free, and created a sub-menu just for us.
So, if any of you are going to use a Hilton in future, you should be able to have a nice breakfast. If you have any problems then approach staff and let them know. We’d be interested to hear, too.
