Southwold Posted by Maggie on 28/9/2006 GF board On a trip to Southwold went into the organic shop, which had lots of our things, and bought a lovely wheat & gluten free ginger cake made by www.village-bakery.com/ It was so nice even husband who hates gluten free stuff asked for more the next night. Had 2 meals at The Crown Hotel in Southwold, one steak and one lamb they cooked from scratch gluten free and a take away curry from the local shop. .... ********************* GF Fish & Chips in Southwold, Suffolk. Holiday in Southwold Posted by Maggie on 3/6/2007 GF board
Went to Southwold again. Stayed at the Swan Hotel this time instead of a cottage. Got the half board as they said "its cheaper as one eats free". I'm not surprised one eats free - I was starving hungry afterwards (had to get a takeaway curry one night after the meal). No kidding I thought "where are the veg" - they were actually hidden under two tiny bits of fish (main course). Its haute cuisine probably - am just a pleb I suppose!! They put a biscuit on my sweet the first night as the waitress made a mistake I think as I did ask her to check with the chef about gluten free and biscuits with my cheese the second night as it said came with bread and I said "no bread". On a positive note, they give you £30 towards eating at the Crown Hotel up the road if you prefer. It did cost more than that but was cheaper than having to eat twice. Had a Goats cheese salady thing for starters, peppercorn steak with loads of veg and Mascarphone icecream and berries for sweet. We could hardly move afterwards we were so stuffed and the waiting staff knew exactly what they were doing as regards gluten free .
Another nice place we saw but didn't have the chance to eat there was a fish place at the harbour (the one with the fish tank as you go in. You get a platter of all sorts of fish and you bring your own bread and wine....
