GF board
Just got back from a family holiday in Derbyshire/Peak District. Armed with loads of information from this board it was a successful trip.
Even though they have been discussed on here previously, I'd like to report my experiences on a couple of particular highlights.
Firstly, The Angel Inn in Holmesfield, near Dronfield. (Main Road, Holmesfield, Dronfield, Derbyshire S18 7WT - 0114 289 0336).
What a pleasure this place turned out to be. We visited on a Tuesday lunchtime so chose from the Bar Menu with a large selection of items listed with a GF symbol. It appeared to be a busy lunchtime and the welcome from the staff was very warm. Ordered our food at the bar, and then some drinks. They didn't have "Against The Grain" GF beer on draught at the time of our visit, but did have it in bottles, so I sampled some - very nice indeed and my wife agreed to drive for the afternoon - result ! We spoke with James, the landlord, about the 'Gluten Free Nights' on a Tuesday evening, which unfortunately we couldn't attend. He said that he's been astonished by the response. In the 2 months he's been running them, only one night has not been fully booked which was during the World Cup (suspect it was the night England played Sweden). He's had to turn regulars away on a Tuesday because they'd forgotten to book !
Secondly, The Original Farmers Market Shop in Bakewell. (3, Market Street, Bakewell, DE45 1HG - 01629 815814).
I think it was Mairi who mentioned this recently - it's a small shop opposite the Co-Op. There was a well-stocked freezer with GF pies & pizzas. I bought a 'Carolyn's Meat & Potato pie' and had it for dinner that evening - very good. They also sold Greens GF beers and a large range of GF biscuits. I bought some great 'Coconut Toasties' and 'Choc Chip & Orange biscuits' from the Farmhouse Recipes range (website link at the bottom - 80% of their products are GF) and some lovely 'Dark Choc & Cherry cookies' made by Just Biscuits (www.just-biscuits.co.uk - Castleton, Hope Valley, S33 8WN - 01433 621319). I wanted to buy a GF Bakewell Pudding but couldn't see them. When I asked the man apologised profusely and said that their cook was making them right now along with the GF Pork Pies and asked me to pop back in a couple of hours. Unfortunately, we weren't staying in Bakewell for that long, but it was good to know.
