From several people on the message board :
When I go out for a meal in Keswick I usually go to Lucas Italian Restaurant where 90% of the menu is Gluten Free. They have the Gluten Free menu clearly marked and is quite separate from the usual menu. They are open Tues - Sunday.
The other place I go to is the Packhourse Pub in Packhourse Court where the chef will adapt any meal you require with Gluten Free sauces
Fishers Walking Shop has a cafe called Abrams and they have a good understanding of Gluten Free and normally have at least one Gluten Free cake on offer. (Open 9am - 5pm)
The Strawberry Cafe on the Main Street do both a Gluten Free brownie and teabread. (Open 9am - 5pm) I have had several good salads/jacket spuds there.
There is a lovely spot in Keswick off the main high street. The best I can do am afraid is mention it is down the alley behind the fudge/icecream shop which is painted marshmallow pink. It's linked to a bike store and you could easily miss it, but they advertise GF meals and say they have regular customers, they did a simple cheese on toast for my daughter which went down swell. Other things they had on the menu were meals and could adapt other meals/snacks. I have only been twice and am not from Keswick, but can't remember what it was called, samll place but very friendly! >>It's called The Lakeland Pedlar and it's based at Henderson's Yard, Bell Close, Keswick. Tel 017687 74492. It's a wholefood cafe and bike shop and it's lovely (although I haven't actually had any GF food there. You could always give them a ring. (http://www.lakelandpedlar.co.uk/)
************************************************Keswick Gluten Free Fish and Chips Posted by Theresa on 21/5/2008 Gf board
Yet another reason to come to the Lake District and Keswick in particular. A local fish and chip shop has 'gone gluten free on Tuesdays' and I can honestly say they are the best chips and battered fish I have tasted since before going GF.
Richard and Kate Barton who run the Windebrowe Avenue Fish and Chip Shop are trying the Tuesday experiment in response to requests from customers.
Although the flour for the GF batter is considerably more expensive (£3.50 as apposed to the normal £1.40), Mr Barton says that they would not be putting up the price of their fish and chips.
They will stand the cost themselves for the time being until they see what the reaction from customers is.
Mr Barton says that they can only do GF one day a week as they are just a small chippy and there's a lot of work involved in changing the oil.
Bravo to them for having a go though.

Had a look on the Supp Board before I went to Keswick last week and had lots of options for cakes and meals. The Packhorse pub in Packhorse Court was excellent and very GF aware, the Wild Strawberry served excellent Brownies and Abrahams Tearooms in Fishers outdoor shop were really helpful although they didn't have any gf cake on the day I was there. The only place I would have reservations about was Maysons Cafe/Restaurant. Although the chef was able to tell me which dishes were GF he assumed that mayonnaise was GF and wasn't willing to go and check the jar which it came in. A very indifferent attitude which left me rather annoyed but more importantly worried that he didn't really understand the full issues re GF cooking. Certainly wouldn't go back or recommend this place.

Re: Lake District Posted by Theresa on 5/7/2005 If you fancy a bit of a drive up to Keswick, there is a superb Italian Restaurant called 'Lucas' 017687 74621- about 90% of their menu is Gluten Free - and that which is not the chef will arrange for a suitable alternative. I have eaten there 3 times now and every meal has been delicious, even when they are busy. They never overbook and give you plenty of time to eat and there is even a choice of about 3 GF desserts. All the staff are well informed about Coeliac and even provide GF breadsticks while you choose your meal. Booking is advisable. Sorry no website. Read more: coeliac.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=cumbria&action=display&thread=436#ixzz1CXg3Ohiu

From UK coeliac ....recently stayed at Ferndene Guest House in Keswick where they were very helpful and able to accommodate my dietary needs. I supplied bread and emphasised non contamination with bread/cooked breakfast. They went to the trouble of organising g/f cumberland sausage for me too! Also available, but fully booked at the time is Cranford House in Keswick who advertise as catering for coeliacs. Hope this is useful, Mike www.ferndene-keswick.co.uk/

Cockermouth and Keswick for the supp. Posted by CathGF on 18/3/2012
GF board Just for the record - have managed a safe trip (food wise anyway!! the horse riding not so much!), staying at the Allerdale Court Hotel in Cockermouth (just had bacon and eggs for breakfast), ate at Trout Hotel which labels GF items on menu, can do versions of all their sandwiches with Genius, couple of sweet things on the menu there. That is also in Cockermouth. In Keswick ate at Salsa Mexican, huge portions, could have fed 2 people on what they gave me! Didn't really have any choice about where I went as part of a big group but considering that, all went pretty well.

GF board
we are just back from being in Windermere for 4 days. we didn't eat out much as my daughter is only 3 (she is the coeliac) however i was impressed in generally how much more common gluten free food was. there were choices in lots of cafes (usually soup and cake), however most of the cakes weren't suitable for my daughter - too grown up for her tastes
we did go out for dinner once to Luca's in Keswick where i rang and they arranged for her to have spaghetti bolognase (her fav). however it was fairly expensive and there were no deals for eating early - usually the upside of having to eat so early in the evening
we were in Beatrix Potter Experience in Bowness today and on the board in the cafe it did say there was gluten free food/cake available on request - we didn't go in though
a good trip though and certainly will be going back esp when my daughter is a little older and can make better use of food over there

GF in Keswick Posted by Steve on 29/9/2013 Gf board Myself and a fellow Coeliac had the good fortune to spend 3 nights in Keswick and even better fortune to come across The George Hotel & Restaurant. We had to book a table (always a good sign) and the GF options were outstanding in choice, quality, quantity and price, there was a completely separate GF menu and I mean a GF menu book not a sheet. Also highly recommend for GF scones and other options: Pillars Coffee Shop 21 Main Street Keswick Cumbria We were both very pleasantly surprised at the GF awareness in all the eating places that we attended in Keswick. Link: The George www.georgehotelkeswick.co.uk/ Re: GF in Keswick Posted by Audrey on 29/9/2013 The George Hotel looks great and thanks for your recommendation. However, I am very surprised there is no mention of the gluten free menu on their website, not even that they can cater for special diets. They must be losing business that way and coeliacs are losing the chance of a good meal or place to stay.

Keswick Posted by Annette on 9/7/2016, 12:03:40 109.154.151.x
Hi All,
Recently spent a week in Keswick and to summarise I found these gluten free options.
Meals: The George, St Johns St. Gluten free menu. Good portion size.
Cafes: Java; nice gluten free chocolate cake very good coffee. Little Chamonix; gluten free chocolate orange cake, little dry but last slice, ok coffe Abrahams;lovely cake and ok coffee. The new cafe by the lake is very noisy and no evidence of gluten free cake.
Ice Cream: Most of Cassa Bellas ice cream (from resturant or gelateria) is gluten free but not so concerned about cross contamination "with cones" when serve in a tub. However, I had ice cream five times (always asking if gluten free) with no ill affects. Only one server was confused by the question.

Leonard's Field Guest House in Keswick, Lake District. Posted by Theresa(Leonardsfield) on 9/3/2013 GF board ...Guest House in Keswick, the Northern Lake District, Cumbria. ..... . As well as catering for the ordinary diet, I specialise in gluten free cooking. I am a diagnosed coeliac since 2001 and have turned over 50% of our kitchen to the sole preparation of gluten free food. I have a separate toaster, cutlery, chopping boards and fridge etc. I can create a full gluten free breakfast that is no different to a normal breakfast, together with a choice of bread for toast, choice of breakfast cereals and strict attention to ensuring the condiments remain gluten free, ie no crumbs in the jam. There is also gluten free biscuits in the room and I can prepare gluten free packed lunches. I have a folder jam packed with cafes and restaurants that I have personally vetted, which can serve gluten free food and understand the cross contamination issues. I don't know about anyone else, but I feel re-assured when one of the owners of an establishment, whether a B&B or a cafe, are themselves following a gluten free diet. Because only then do they have a real understanding of the issues we can face. And apart from that I think its nice to chat about different hints and tips for recipies and food preparation. It is really nice to swop experiences of different places, cafes, hotels etc with people who really understand! Due to the Guest House being run on a restricted basis, I am now keen to get back up to normal capacity with several Bank Holidays etc still available. Please phone or email for more information, and I will be happy to help. Recently returned from a 3 night stay in Keswick and again I highly recommend The George for its separate Gf menu, the choice within the menu and the portion size. We ate there 1st and 3rd nights, 2nd night we ate at LB's Pizza House but we were both disappointed with the pizza's and the one GF available dessert had sold out! We left there still feeling hungry. There is a Wetherspoons in Keswick but after walking thro' it neither of us felt like eating there, it felt more like a "greasy spoon cafe". We only ate lunch once within Keswick and that was at the Abrahams Cafe within George Fisher, we have eaten there before and I do recommend it. Only negative is that it is small and does get very busy. There are definitely more GF cakes available in the ever increasing Tea rooms within Keswick.
