Lakeland, Windermere. Fantastic food Posted by julieB on 25/2/2011 GF board
Took mother on a trip to what I remember as Lakeland Plastics in Windermere. Oh my they have gone seriously upmarket! We went to have lunch in the upstairs restaurant and I could feel the "Oh no yet another baked potato" gloom descending and I checked for my crackers and banana...... THEN I saw the menu. CLEARLY marked G for gluten free and V for vegetarian. THEN I saw that just about everything was GF!!!! THEN my mother spotted that at least three of the puddings were marked with a G too. When our order was taken we were asked if we wanted a baguette or gluten free bread with our soup! I can honestly say that has never happened to me before! The meal and the customer service was fabulous. We're going back....... even if mother doesn't need any kitchen supplies! (We ate: pea and ham soup, carrot and coriander soup, wonderful warm gf poppy and sunflower seed bread with apple and cinnamon cake for pudding.) What was so special about the whole day was that I did not feel stressed, awkward or embarrassed about having to quiz the floor staff about flour, contamination and all our other worries (as I clearly did not have to) or, as I sometimes do, just not bother eating and having my banana in the car park later.

St John's Lodge in Windemere Posted by Sandra (EK) on 3/10/2011, My husband and I had a very nice weekend at St John's Lodge in Windemere, Barry, Sue, Julian and Lisa who run the B&B in Windemere made us very welcome. Our room was excellent, quite big with a lovely en-suite, but the best bit of all was the wonderful GF breakfasts, an amazing choice on the menu and homemade GF bread. I would recommend them to anyone who worries about eating safely away from home, they have a great understand of GF and contamination. They even had lovely homemade biscuits in the room for me as well as the normal biscuits for my husband. www.st-johns-lodge.co.uk/

Bowness Posted by Catherine, Birmingham on 19/6/2016, 21:04:43
Just back from a few days away in Windermere and can thoroughly recommend Vinegar Jones Fish and Chips in Bowness. Was chatting to the Boss and his daughter whilst waiting for my gluten free fish and chips and not only was he very knowledgable but he has quite a selection of gf options. ALL the chips are done in one separate fryer with the gf options also in a separate fryer. I was so excited when my fish and chips were put in front of me that I was splattering on the vinegar quick smart before he yelled NOT THAT VINEGAR! He handed me the gf vinegar and INSISTED on frying another meal. All the staff are well trained and despite the fact they were busy (not only full of tourists/the sun was shining/ and there was a rock concert going on in Bowness for funds for victims of the floods)no-one turned a hair at providing gf food. Boss said he'd like to go totally gf but he'd have to raise the prices. Btw he cleans his fryers EVERY day. Lovely, lovely lovely.
