Santa Ponsa GF

GF Board
My wife and I, along with my brother and his wife, recently spent a week, self catering, in Santa Ponsa, Majorca. I am quite sensitive so have to be careful. Fortunately I had no problems during our stay. We tended to do self-catering during the day and ate out at night. I couldn't find much information on GF dining before I went, so thought I would do a short review on how I got on, when I came home.
Eroski Supermarket, Avinguda del Rei Jaume 1
There is a large supermarket called Eroski, which has a " Sin Gluten" (GF) section consisting mainly of bread and cakes. There are also all the other naturally GF food such as meats, cheese, fruit and veg. etc. There are various foods around the store marked as "sin gluten", but I am hopeless at spotting these. I didn't see any GF sections in the numerous smaller supermarkets
Jackie's restaurant, Carrer Gran Via Puig de Galatzo
This restaurant has Gluten Free marked on the menu. They can do lots of options GF. They also have GF pizzas and pasta. Staff appeared very knowledgeable. I had the pizza twice and it was lovely. We ate here on 3 nights.
Sherezade Restaurant, Avinguda Del Rei Jaume 1
We liked the look of this place so went in and asked if they could do GF. They said that I could choose something from the menu and that they would check with the chef if he could cook it GF. I chose a couple of options which could not be done GF, before the chef agreed that he could make me a GF leg of lamb with chips and veg. Staff were very helpful and seemed as if they were not going to take any chances, as they trooped back and forward to the kitchen, until they were sure that I could have a meal that was GF. The meal was lovely.
Scott's Restaurant, Calle Ramon de Moncada
We ate here twice. This place looked as if it sold cheap and cheerful pub grub (which I sorely miss), and I would not have thought to check if it did GF, if my brother had not said that he had ate there before, and fancied trying it again. So I went in and spoke to a young Irish waiter, who told me that doing GF was no problem and that they could do GF pizza and sauces. He spoke of the list of other allergens they have to be aware of, and seemed to know what he was talking about. On our first visit I asked if I could have liver and onions with mash and veg. He checked with the chef and came back to tell me that this would be fine, and that they would make a sauce for me separately using cornflour. It was delicious.
McDonald's, Gran Vía de Puig de Galatzó
I am not a great fan of McDonald's, though whenever we take the grandkids here at home, the smell of the food immediately makes me ravenous. However I spoke to one of the McDonald's staff in Santa Ponsa and he told me that they have gluten free buns.
El Ceibo,Calle Ramon De Moncada
This is a South American Steak House. I spoke to the Maitre D. while passing by one night, and he assured me that doing GF was no problem. Unfortunately we did not get round to trying this place.
Theses are only the places I came across, and I am sure that there will be many more. It wasn't all rosey and, just like at home, you have be careful of what people are telling you. I enquired at one restaurant and got the distinct feeling that they would have told me anything to get our custom. Needless to say we did not eat there. Hope that this information is useful to someone...
