I haven't posted about particular restaurants or cafes for a while as it has been so easy to find gluten free food recently - a totally different experience from when I was diagnosed nearly 20 years ago. Since the new laws came in last year there has been very visible improvement and awareness, especially , I have noticed, with people pointing out what is definitely gf ( usually bought in wrapped cakes etc) and what is home made with no gluten containing ingredients but with the possible risk of cross contamination.
I don't think we can gexpect more than that as we have to live in a world where gluten is present and the vast majority of us are perfectly safe eating such products.
Anyway, I have been out and about all over the place this summer and found gf bread for sandwiches all over, plus lots of lovely cakes. Main meals have never been a huge problem for me as I like most things and am happy with something simple.
However I must mention the Mulberry Tearooms, Station Road, (actually a little alley off, but with a sign board at the end) in Sheringham. We found this place purely by chance as it had Gluten Free Options on the sign and I was amazed when the very helpful proprietor said most of the cooked lunch menu was gf including the fish and chips. They use gf batter for all, and he said on Sunday's the roast is served with gf yorkies. There is an extensive reasonably priced menu and lots of veggie choices too.
Away from Norfolk I found Buxton in Derbyshire very good for finding gf but everywhere I have been I have found gf cakes for afternoon tea which is my perfect treat. However I don't think I am the only coeliac who wants to scream when they see another Mrs Crimbles coconut macaroon - so sweet and boring. The National Trust seems to be serving them everywhere, with not so many nice home made cakes, though there still are some to be found if you ask, as they don't seem to label cakes No Gluten Containing Ingredients as one staff member told me they weren't allowed to . Don't know why as other places do.
