Sorrento, gluten free heaven Posted by Barbara Schorah
GF board
I've just been to Sorrento in Italy for 2 weeks and it was nearly gluten free heaven. I say nearly only because of the lovely delicate pastries that I couldn't have BUT there was loads I could have. All the restaurants we ate in had gluten free menus and could do mostly anything on the menu gluten free anyway. I had stuffed courgette flowers twice and had to do the thing I hate - take a photo of them. The staff were quite puzzled when I was so delighted at what I could eat so I had to explain about gf in the uk or lack of it. All chemists in Italy sell gf food even though it is expensive. I went into on chemist and counted 33 kinds of one brand of pasta! I had to take a photo. The selection of individual and packet cakes was very good and they even had a freezer with just gf foods in the supermarkets even though small branches all had some gf foods and the little Italian market shops had bits in as well. The local gf cake is torta caprese, chocolate or lemon, I've just made the lemon one with lemons I brought back. Sounds daft but their lemons taste nothing like the ones we get in the supermarket here. We finished our Italian holiday off in Carluccios at Manchester station and it was just as good as what we'd had in Italy. They sell flour free chocolate and coconut cake there too. I think they are the best of the Italian chains in the UK. If anyone wants anymore info I'm happy to help
