We went to Athens last week.
We had good GF meals on British Airways. (You need to book).
We stayed at the Athens Lotus Apartments. We had a kitchen with a hob, oven, fridge, freezer and kettle.
We ate at Thanasis near to Monastaraki Metro. We had kebabs without the pitta bread (we brought our own GF pitta breads), chips and some salad. The kebabs were delicious and were so filling that the Pitta breads weren't really needed. We needed to use a restaurant card in Greek to explain what we needed. We also ate at a posh restaurant called Aleria. The food was very nice and they understood gluten free without needing to get the restaurant card out.
We were also told at the Athens Lotus Hotel (very near to the Athens Lotus Apartments) that they can do gluten free.
The Athens Lotus Apartments are very close to a small food shop and reasonably close to a Spar Supermarket. Some of the food items have ingredients in English but many are just in Greek.
We took GF rolls, GF cooking sauces, GF cereal, GF nakd bars, GF pitta breads and GF cakes. We found enough meat etc with English ingredients and without gluten to make packed lunches and make evening meals.
In McDonalds (one at Syntagma in centre and one at airport - these are the only 2 in Athens) they refused to sell us a "burger without the bun" but would after negotiation sell us a burger with a separate bun (i.e. wrapper containing the burger and a wrapper containing the unwanted bun). There was an allergy list displayed at the counter (airport) OR on the underneath of the paper tray insert (Syntagma).
