Report on our trip to Kerala, India
Posted by Pam, Dorset on 13/2/2014
First of all Thankyou to Ravi, Val and Catherine who responded to my original post.
We had a brilliant time and had no tummy problems at all.
Fortunately we love curry - if you don't like it don't go to India as apart from a few touristy places there was nothing else at all. Even for breakfast! Some hotels did eggs and fruit, and ordinary bread for toast but mainly it was Indian style so I was glad I'd taken some rolls and crackers. However most things were rice based or made of rice flour so I really enjoyed the appams - rice flour pancakes, and dosas. Restaurant staff usually knew what was in dishes and spoke adequate English. Curries were just about all gf. The appams and dosas were usually only served at breakfast which was a shame as they would have made really nice snack lunches, though one cafe did them at lunchtime. On the houseboat the food was great - in the afternoon I asked if we could have cups of tea and they came with a plate of freshly fried banana fritters. In a rice flour batter. Can you imagine my excitement? Yes of course you can , you're coeliacs too! They made me some for breakfast too. - after the egg curry! We went to a Keralan home for a cookery session and meal and that was fantastic. - our trip organiser had told them about my gf and there was just one dish I couldn't have, some sort of spicy rissoles, but the lady knew to use separate oil.
Another treat was at Kovalam beach where there was a German bakery cafe which had continental style cakes including an almond one which was gf. Gorgeous with a cup of local tea.
We flew Emirates and on all 4 flights my gf meal turned up - not brilliant food but as good as all the normal airline meals and they did actually include the chocolate that most airlines seem to think we can't eat.
So, an unforgettable trip with tea picking, elephant rides, spectacular scenery and lots to eat. However we were desperate for a meal that wasn't curry when we got home!
