Sussex

have just returned from a few days away in Rye, Sussex.
have a few gems to pass on...
Mrs Burtons Tea rooms, Battle.
I googled and found this place ahead of visiting. it looked promising so we went along for lunch one day. it was full (only a little place so book if u can)
well, they found a way to fit us in after I explained our gf needs and how we really had wanted to eat there. they were attentive, they had a full and varied gf menu too. we had a most wonderful meal, so much choice I didn't know what to pick but I went for fish cakes, my son had a toastie and my (gf by association) husband had bangers, mash and onion gravy. we could not manage pud (scones were on offer, cake and mince pies too).
the staff were wonderful, we ate well and we ate safely thanks to their attention to detail. I cannot recommend highly enough.
in Pett Level near Rye we visited the Smugglers inn. looked at the menu and didn't expect too much but I spoke to the chef as well as the helpful waiter/bar man and they informed me how they could feed us safely (all off menu, just what they rustled up). so we had a divine gilled sea bream, chicken kebab and a Greek salad with lamb kebab. we were stuffed! the staff were more than happy to find out how they could help us and the food would have been good value at twice the price. again I cannot recommend them highly enough.
we also found the supermarkets (Tesco and coop mostly) to be well stocked for the gf essentials and also saw coffee shops in rye that catered and also a butcher with gf sausages.
off topic from food, we stayed at Grannys Cottage in Pett Level (google it). oh my..what a find. spotlessly clean so a real gem for catering gf for ourselves. would go back tomorrow if I could!!
all in all a great trip!!
