Just back from a fab weeks holiday staying in sandown. The co-op and sainsburys in the high street both had a reasonable selection of free from stuff (though we had our main shop delivered from Tesco in ryde). Fat Harrys chip shop told me GF was available all day every day and we ate there twice - some other posters said they had not had the same luck but maybe that was due to a fryer breakdown or something. We also got lovely take-away cake from the "Fresh Cafe", just further up and on the seaward side of the high street (sandwiches also available and it was all kept in separate containers away from the main serving area to avoid cc). They also do about 12 flavours of GF ice cream and GF waffle cones - and knew to wash their hands and the ice cream scoop before using it on the GF cone - you should have seen the grin from ear to ear on my daughter who usually has to settle for a magnum! Finally, a huge thank you to Mark who recommended the 3 Bishops pub in Brigstone who had a superb GF menu and were very clued up - several choices of mains including from the specials board, lots of meals clearly marked GF and others that came with bread available with GF on request. Also several choices of homemade GF dessert - and a lovely quaint village with thatched cottages well worth seeing. The village store even had a few GF items including a new brand of crispbread crackers we have yet to try.

Re: Isle of Wight - feedback Posted by Sally (London) on 1/9/2013, 22:12:48, in reply to "Isle of Wight - feedback" We were also on the Island last week and had a great meal in The Buddle, in Niton www.buddleinn.co.uk/ Nothing specific on the menu, but the chef came and spoke to us and seemed very clued up. There were lots of options on the specials board, like fresh fish, venison etc (not the chips as they are cooked with scampi). My daughter really enjoyed her curry and an enormous 'strawberry mess' for pudding.

Ise of Wight update Posted by Yet another carole on 19/9/2013, 13:53:29
After a short break there I discovered a few new places. First of all the Twins are at the farmers markets in Newport and Ryde (not sure how often they are though). The Pencil Cottage in Shanklin has gf scones and cake. The Old Smithy in Godshill have delicious scones. You get 2 'normal' scones but I was only given one, not sure if that's usual but I was thinking of the calories. French Franks in Ryde and Newport has gf options. King Lud, Ryde Esplanade has gf options and also have some of the Twins products. Fat Harry's in Sandown on the day I visited was very clean and the fish and batter was lovely. At Corries cabin they said although the batter was gf it is cooked in the same oil. So you have to make your own decision on that one!
