g-f holiday abroad with small children Posted by gluten-free mum on 3/1/2013
GF board
thinking about a first holiday abroad since diagnosis with our coeliac small children (age 5 and 3 and non-coeliac 18month old)
Any suggestions for somewhere that would be very easy for gf food? Thinking of a hotel or similar that provides gf food rather than self-catering and having to get to grips with labels in foreign languages.
Any recommendations from personal experience of particular places would be much appreciated.
From Apricot
Hotel Orquidea in Gran Canaria...a hotel well able to cater for us. Plus ample for the little ones...in May time would be great...
Take a look on Trip Advisor...I wrote a blurb on there. Its one used by Thomsons (dont have any connection, but am a very frequent user, and dont part with £ easily!!).
From Louisa (cheshire)
I stayed in Gran Canaria 2 years ago, and never had any problems. The hotel staff had a good understanding of the coeliac diet, and most spoke good English. If you look on the sup boards you can find my review as well as lots of others.
From Peter (Kates Dad)
We took Kate last year to Los Christianos in Tenerife, had no problems
take a translation card, it does help
and McDonalds do happy meals, sin gluten
From Eileen (Bristol)
..Fuerteventura is an excellent destination for families and I find restaurants there are very aware of the GF diet. The beaches are fabulous too....

I am Danish, but has read your posts on GF in Tenerife. It has been very helpful. Thank you. Now I would like to respond with my experiences.
In my Family we are GF with the little extra challenge, that we are also milk and soy free. I have just been away last week. We planned to eat Canarian foods since we were here on Holiday. I must say, that we found no help in any of the tourist informations. BUT we still found the most wonderful restaurant in San Miguel de Tajao (Arico). We needed only to explain our needs once and they saw no problem in it at all. They have fresh fish, clams, squids etc. We simply pointed to what we would like to eat, and they prepared it is a way suitable to us. The staff spoke English. The buns were not gluten free. We brought our own. You can also buy local wine here. Locals come in droves - an indicator of the quality of place. The restaurant is located in the small fishing village of San Miguel de Tajao northeast of the Southern airport. (not too far from the pyramids, if you are in car). Don't be fooled by the bland and boxy look of the restaurant. It is a hit. Here is a nice little stone beach at the end of the road, if you have to stretch your legs after lunch.
