Italy is great for Coeliacs
Posted by Pam, Dorset on 31/10/2012
Just returned from a short break to Florence and Pisa which was lovely - warm sunshine and all the gf food I could eat. I'd done my homework before I went and found list of hotels, B&Bs that do gf breakfast and looked on Supp board and googled to find eating places. My conclusion - Italy is the best European country I've been to for gf. The Italian Coeliac society apparently works with hotels restaurants etc and it is easy not just to find gf food but also complete awareness by staff - not once did I get that 'What???' response you so often get here.
Here are my recommendations.
HOSTARIA IL DESCO – TA*48
Via delle Terme 23 rosso – Firenze – Tel +39 055 294882
www.hostariaildesco.com
Closed on Monday evenings
This was THE BEST.Full menu (including the special Tuscan menu with all courses) and breads. They even gave me extra fresh bread to take for my breakfast as hotel only did prepacked gf stuff. Full choice of puds like choc cake with pears.

Found by chance when eagle eyed husband (well trained!) spotted the coeliac menu. Plenty of pasta and pizza plus other stuff.
Ciro & sons
via del Giglio28r

You have to order pizza 24 hours in advance but they were lovely, though other places did gf pizza withough having to order. Pasta too but didn't try it.
La Botteghe di Donatello
Piazza de Duomo
Right there in the centre behind the cathedral.
Full gf menu
In Pisa
La Scaletta
Via Pietrasantina 107
050562269
Hard to find as not in the tourist bit near the tower and also not in main town. Gf menu translated but they don't speak much English. Recommended by coeliac receptionist at our hotel as the only place in Pisa to have the Italian Coeliac soc seal of approval. Bread basket with variety of gf breads and pizza etc available though I didn't have it. Lovely puds too.
When I was first diagnosed I steered clear of travelling to Italy but have now been a few times and it really is wonderful for coeliacs.
