Just out of hospital after 18 days and have survived the food! absolutely amazed by the lack of variety on the menu.Had no choice what i had, everyday for the first 10days atleast was either white fish with rice or pots, or chicken with same. No sauces etc. Second week i think they actually may have had a chef and i got some meat and gravey. No supply of cereal, though they did get some bread in. Haven't been in hospital before and wasn't related to the coeliac but of all places i would have thought they would have been more clued up. If you were diabetic/halal/kosher etc you could choose a meal. Can't beleive it can be so difficult to supply a gluten free meal.Just wondering what they give to the kids as sure they wouldnt have eaten it.

I was recently an emergency admisson to North Tees Hospital in Stockton and was told by the Doctor if I ate I could go home. The girl came and asked would I like lunch and said there was roast chicken and gravy I said that would be fine but no gravy . She said it comes like that ( I sudden realised that they now don't cook the meals but are bought in. I did work within the hospital 5 years ago). I explained I was Gluten free the girl said Oh they did say last week the chicken in gravy is ok or I have sausage and mash or Mince and dumplings !!She did offer me salad but I had had a bad stomach bug /food posioning so I felt I could not risk salad. This girl had no idea and I don't blame the girl she should be trained and the meals should be marked . I ended up with a cake and a biscuit brought from home by my husband . When I got better I rang the PALS department of the hospital to complain and she told me the Catering Manager would ring me.He hasn't yet so I rang back and asked could he write to me,still no response,it is now 3 weeks since I rang . What would of happened if I had not had some one to go and get me something to eat? Would I have starved waiting to go home ??!!

heartlands in birmingham had g/f meal options and although they wont be food memories i will forever treasure, i did eat safely and was served first to avoid c/c of veg etc. they were equally as foul as the normal meals. but at least i could eat. soup for lunch, cottage pie/roast meals for the evening. brekkie consisted of fruit and yoghurt and nasty coffee. but have to say, it could have been worse. it was a planned op so i did address it during my pre op appointment. not sure what an emergency would be like?

I was an emergency admission recently to the Royal Berkshire Hospital and the food situation
if you are gluten free was awful. I was told by a
Doctor to eat a meal (as I am Diabetic)but nothing was available. A nurse very kindly
raided her packed lunch and gave me a banana.
I was told a Dietician would be called to arrange gluten free food.Is it so difficult
to supply gluten free food. Fortunatly family
arrived and bought me a gluten free sandwich from the in house Marks and Spencer.
When I did receive a meal it was a dried up plain
piece chicken with broccoli - awful.
I was not looking for 5* food just something edible.
We have long way to go in hospitals for the supply of g/f food

I haven't been for a stay but was there for my endoscopy and after was given a cup of tea and a biscuit. Good job I didn't eat it because it was an ordinary digestive....and I was there because of my coeliac.it really does make me wonder sometimes

Have to agree hospitals have a long way to go. I used to write on menu what Iwould like but it all depended on diet chef what food was like. Soup was usually fine.
