I stayed in Filey last week and went on the hunt for gluten free fish and chips. The first shop I went to "CJ's" Murray St, the main road down to the beach. I asked a young assistant if they did gluten free fish and chips, she looked at me blankly, I had to repeat it a few times, explaining what gluten free was and if they fried their chips separately to the battered items. in the end she asked the frier who said,"we use beef dripping love, so no you cant have them" at this point I gave up.
We went up Mitford Street to Dicky Bee's chip shop. I asked the same question and I had only got a few words out and the lovely lady asst couldnt have been more clued up. Although they didnt have gluten free batter, they fried their chips separately and said she would fry a new lot of chips for me and would use a clean scoop to get them out. She knew about CD and had quite a few coeliac customers. I had chips and mushy peas (they made these themselves so knew they were g/f). They were so good I had 2 bags of chips that week, which is an achievement as I only usually get to have one bag a year. I had no ill effects. I would highly recommend Dicky Bee's in Filey for anyone visiting.
