Sheraton Hotel Park Lane London
Afternoon Tea - special treat
Posted by Suzanne on 9/1/2005
Yesterday afternoon I was treated to an afternoon tea which had been booked in advance by my daughter at the "Sheraton Hotel Park Lane" in Piccadilly London. The head chef had baked g/free bread and I was provided with 5 different fillings in my sandwichs. Followed by a plate of g/free scones, delicate chocolate cakes,a individual triffle, individual apple & blackberry crumble and a selection of fresh fruits with a custard type dip! Needless to say that I didnt eat the vast selection but I made sure I tasted each one. A wonderful treat the cost was £22 per head but you could stay there all afternoon and enjoy the surroundings and listen to the harp being played....Last year I was taken to the Ritz for afternoon tea at the cost of £35, and the selection and taste was definately beaten by the Sheraton...First class venue if you want to treat a Coeliac.

Gossip
Area: Chelsea
Category: Cafes
Address: Chelsea Court Yard, 250 Kings Rd, SW3 5UE
Travel: Sloane Square tube, then buses 11, 19, 22, 211 or 319
Hours: Open daily 10am-6pm
Prices: Meal for two with wine and service: around £80
I expected Gossip to be a buzzing brasserie full of ladies who lunch. With its name, its Chelsea location and its lunchtime-only opening hours, you would think that, wouldn't you? Even the menu - with its many vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free options - has 'fashionistas who don't eat much' written all over it. But on our visit lunching ladies were nowhere to be seen: instead, the spacious courtyard of this otherwise spartan organic café was overrun with families with kids
.....In the interests of journalistic duty we even tried gluten-free cookies - you may have to be on a gluten-free diet to appreciate them.
For the prices and the location, the cooking here lacks finesse and is rough around the edges. Good food isn't only about ingredients, it's also about cooking ability - and just because something is organic doesn't mean it will taste wonderful.

Leon embraces all the current culinary fads, fancies and fashions with gusto and not, as is often the case with healthy eating, with neuroticism: the ingredients are seasonal and occasionally organic; the chicken is free-range; the coffee is ethically traded; many items are low-carb, low-GI, vegetarian-friendly, allergy-friendly, gluten-free, dairy-free, sugar-free, light, healthy and great for your sex life (I made that last one up). At a time when I believe food producers and suppliers are poised to be "the new celebrity chefs", the fuss-free, ingredient-led cooking of this little fast food joint could well be a snapshot of how we want to eat today.

Fresh HOT corn bread

My mum went into a different bakers the other day on our local high street (the Mediteranian (turkish cypriot shop) streatham high road, london) , and they sell fresh gluten free corn bread. Apparently the grandson of the baker is GF. I feel really sad that this poor kid is GF but at the same I can't help but thank God that this kid was born in the right house and loads of other people have got to benefit. Other coeliacs eat the bread from there as well. The bread is a dream, its hot, fresh, soft, and it smells sooooooo good! Best of all its big and only costs £1!

I first emailed (annasthai@hotmail.com) and warned them of my upcoming visit and got a great response from them, they were very helpful and accommodating. They asked me to choose a few dishes I fancied and replied with ingredient listings for each one. I pre-booked number 34 without soy/oyster sauce, I took my own gf soysauce for using at the table. They asked about potato starch on the night and were spot on. I got a great meal and belly was fine afterwards!!! Was not sure about the puddings, but had eaten so much was happy to have a coffee anyhow.
I visited the one on the High Street in Croydon.

Went to London on Wednesday and was given some gluten free muffins made by this company. They were super and I would thoroughly recommend them. They makes other things as well although it looks like you can only get their products in the London area.

'Dixie Queen' cruising up and down to River Thames!
Prom on the River Thames

GF board
I had a brilliant night last night at my college prom on board the 'Dixie Queen' cruising up and down to River Thames! It came to the buffet and I expected nothing (as I've unfortunately had to learn to) despite being told there would be a gluten free option. I got to the buffet and asked and they were so nice! they took my plate away and although I (and vegetarians) had to wait a lot longer than everyone else, they served chicken with onions, spring onions and peppers and I could have the rice (with loads different veggies in, kinda like special fried rice which I've never had before) and salad with it! I was so full (or maybe it was the lure of the disco...!) I never got to see whether they had a desert for me but it was really nice and I'd recommend it to anyone! They were really clued up with cross contamination and she used new serving spoons and everything despite the fact a different one was used for each type of food any way!
