Durham Report Posted by Audrey on 19/8/2011
GF board
Once again, many thanks to Vee for her long list of suggestions for Durham. .....
Wanting morning coffee and a cake, I first tried Leonard's Coffee House. They didn't have anything sweet, so I went on to the Almshouses on Palace Green. The only GF cake they had was a choc brownie - but it was nice.
Went for lunch at Cafe Continental. What a fabulous place! Lots of choice. I settled for a butternut squash soup (delicious!) and a club sandwich. The sandwich was packed with chicken, ham and salad but came without butter or mayonnaise. I asked why, and they said there might be cross contamination issues (crumbs on the knives used for butter and mayo). I asked if they had any small packets of butter and they brought me some at once. I can highly recommend Cafe Continental and I hope to return in the very near future.
I presume they must have quite a few GF customers, and they seem very knowledgeable, so I find it surprising they don't keep a small jar of GF mayonnaise in the fridge especially for us.....
Next time, I will do what I do when I go abroad, I will take some sachets of Hellman's with me (bought in Morrison's cafe - 8p each) and make my sandwich even more delicious.
