Hi, just back from Ljubljana, Slovenia. Well worth a visit! (Easyjet) Didn't really have a problem with finding something to eat. Breakfast was continental so,if you can put up with cheese and eggs for a couple of days, your okay although i did take my own bread. Was given the name of a pizzeria by the Slovenian Coeliac Society (Gregorinos, Vojkova 34) very easy to reach (get to train station, check out the map, go thru the underpass, head straight up the main road over two main junctions and its on the right hand side of the main road, (its about a 10 min walk), although this place is in a residential area, not so nice to look at but pizza was the best I've tasted yet! Another place for your evening meal is a lovely place on the river called Abercedarium Cafe who have live entertainment, two guys playing acoustic guitar...fantastic! I got a translation from Intertrans, if you give this to the waitress, she will let you know what you can have. The menu is in english but just to be on the safe side, check it out. I had a lovely dish called Buckwheat mush with (sorry to the all the veggies out there) with smoked foal and on another night, mushroom and courgette risotto with dollar chips. For two beautiful meals and couple of wines, and a must have hot chocolate with cream it came to about £20.
Places to see: The city itself has some lovely architecture, a castle and many museums but don't expect to find a bargain in the tourist shops. But you can pick up some wee souvenirs and some lovely fresh fruit from the local market located on the river bank (1 kilo of grapes its approx 40p) plus the experience of the real slovenian people.
Postojna caves & Predjama castle, these places are very hard to reach, you can either book a tour which costs about £30 but well worth it or if your adventurous, hire a car which is around £25 per day. Postojna caves are absolutely out of this world. Tour costs about £10. Predjama Castle structure is fascinating, although they have no in -depth history and very few artifacts or geneology due to their turbulent past and ever-changing rulership, everthing seems to have been lost in time. I find this interesting in itself. Entrance costs about £4.
Bled Castle and Lakes is a must. You can travel here by bus from the Ljubljana main bus and train station. Most people speak english so there are really no problems with communicating. It cost around £4 each way on the bus. This is a lovely day out. The castle is built on top of hill (fair wee walk) with stunning views over the lake and julian alps. You can go on a boat trip which costs about £10 but a better option would be to hire a rowing boat which you can take to the small island on the lake which houses a church. You can just dock the boat, go for wander, have a coffee. Don't know how much this costs.
Sorry for going on. This country is especially interesting due to their oppressed past and recent democratic change. Makes you think how much we take for granted!
Reasonable accommodation: Park Hotel, Tabor 9... 2mins from centre. Around £22 per person per night inc breakfast (go before 8.00am) Ensuite, very clean.
Try and pick up the info leaflets at the airport as the tourist information doesn't really have a lot. You will find handy maps of the city here. There are also buses which run to the city centre or you can hire a taxi (£4 or £15).
The currency is sit and tolars... you can either change from £s to tolars here as all shops, rest etc take tolars but some of the larger establishments take the euro.. but to save confusion take tolars.
I hope this doesn't sound like an advertisement but it is perfect for a city break. I don't know what opening times are like at the weekends (Sundays? 95% catholic population). Mid-week great. Hope this this helpful...susie
