…I've just returned from a fantastic 5 days in Bruges (a lovely 50th birthday surprise from my husband). My husband had planned everything carefully around my dietary needs (I've been diagnosed Coeliac for two years). We stayed in one of the three Bariseele Bed and Breakfast apartments that adjoin the Hotel Fevery situated a pleasant ten minute walk from the Market Square, away from the hustle and bustle of central Bruges. These apartments are run by Benny Vercamer. Benny’s knowledge of gluten free was already good, but he was keen for us to educate him further on Coeliac Disease. He provided a very nice gluten free breakfast in our apartment each morning, including gf bread, ciabattas and croissants – very nice!
The hotel Fevery itself is run by Paul Asselman who was also very knowledgeable about gluten free and also provides gluten free breakfasts for his guests on request. He was also happy to recommend restaurants in Bruges where I could eat safely.
We also had a day trip to the WW1 Battlefields at Ypres organised by Quasimodo Tours. Paul from Hotel Fevery booked the tour for us and had arranged for them to provide me with a gluten free lunch, which they did – very nice indeed!
All in all, a lovely experience. Paul and Benny were brilliant and considering they were not coeliacs themselves, were very clued up and happy to help and also keen to learn more from us, which I think is all we ask for!…

….Benny bought them in Belgium from a Bio Shop (which is like our Health Shop) in Bruges. He did mention that the ciabattas were made by Schar. …..

Bhavani
I recommend Bhavani Indian restaurant in Bruges.
The waiting staff speak good English & fully understood ‘no wheat, no barley , no rye, no oats’ -so I didn‘t need dietary cards.
I’m vegetarian as well as coeliac so had palak paneer (Indian cheese & spinach ) with plain boiled rice.

El Greco
In El Greco Greek restaurant the waiting staff also had excellent English and understood my special diet.
The only suitable meal for me there was Greek salad but I think fish-eating coeliacs would be safe with eg grilled swordfish .
