Tours - the town in France
Posted by Ayesha on 9/3/2007
... back from a week in Tours in France. So for all of you guys out there who may be enticed by Michael O'Leary's ultra cheap flights here is some basic info...
The town itself has never heard of gluten let alone gluten free. Not to panic the standard fail safes of omlette, steak hache as well as steak was freely available as were chips cooked alone and salads. The town had limited restaurants but the usual suspects were there: Quick (think run away!), Macdonalds (but they were doing potato skins and some type of pizza ball thing), Hippopotamus (think steak house). Flunch was available out in Chambray. In addition there are tons of supermarkets in the town centre ideal for getting food but not specific gf food. I was able to pick up 'rice sald meals' from the ready section.
In terms of the castle towns:
In Chenonceaux the castle's restaurant and coffe shop was closed as was most of the town. My gf bars had to be shared with my non gf husband.
Amboise was more promising, the lady at the 'ye olde worlde' look alike salon de the had heard of gluten and said that her macaroons (the pretty coloured ones) were made with only almonds! There was also a creperie selling galettes de sarracin (buckwheat pancakes). The cafe at the bottom of the castle were very keen on helping my picky eater husband.
In Blois things were quite limited (partly due to it being a sunday) and so went to the safe meals - omlette and chips.
All in all it was a good place to visit various castles from. So if Michael O'Leary does tempt you make sure you pack some GF essentials - I did.
