Hi
Has anyone been to Puerto Rico in Gran Canaria? I'm going there at the end of the month, and was just wondering if anyone could recommend any restaurants, and health food stores/ supermarkets.
Thanks Simone

Just returned from a week at the Maspalomas Princess hotel in Gran Canaria. The hotel was excellent, especially the food. The reataurant manager took a keen interest in ensuring that I was well catered for. There was a great choice of food at all meal times for a coeliac. I'd certainly recommend this place for anyone considering a holiday in the Canaries. I flew with Thomson and had good gluten free meals both ways - it was worth paying the £14 extra charge.

...., I visited Gran Can in April and can recommend "A Taste of Bali" restaurant opposite the casino in Maspalomas. The manager (Spanish) and the chefs (Indonesian) were really good, as was the food. Huge brandies served afterwards too! Ate there twice.

The resort is very hilly, sand on the beach is black(volcanic). Just around the bay is Amadores which is fine, just watch the current in the water. There is a place called Sioux Cityat San Agustin which is based on a cowboy theme, they also have a barbeque evening.Palmitos Park is worth a look has plants and animals. There is a restaurant with fixed priced meals(eat as much as you like)in Playa Des Inglis near a shopping centre called Centro Yumbo. The main beach on Gran Canaria is Maspalomas partly Textile with a lot of Naturist areas. If you are self catering there is a shopping centre at Atlantic city which includes a Carrefore shopping centre. I have had no problem eating there and many do understand Gluten free in the restaurants. The greeting you give to locals is "Ola". ...

Canary Capers We recently had a short break in Gran Canaria where, in addition to the weather, we found the food very much to our liking. Not being Spanish speakers we took a printed copy of a phrase, in Spanish, explaining Judith's gluten free needs ...................In the event we found we only needed it in one restaurant, just outside Vega de San Mateo at a non-tourist place where no English was spoken. Thanks to our "phrase" they immediately understood and we were delighted to find that the whole meal, which included a wonderful home made soup, was g-f, and quite superb. We stayed at Maspalomas where we found good restaurants offering a good selection of g-f food, particularly those at the Commercial Centre (shops & restaurants by the beach) at Varadero. For those wanting a bit of self catering we found a good selection of g-f foods in a health food shop at a mall in Vecindario. N.B. The phrases we used can be found by following the link on our site The phrases are available in many different languages. www.ggfi.co.uk/newsletter6.htm#Canary%20Capers *************************** Re: Gran Canaria Posted by paul in madrid on 13/4/2008 GF board There are El Corte Ingles shops here: Centro Comercial Siete Palmas Avda. Pintor Felo Monzón, s/n Avenida José Mesa y López, 18 And you'll be able to buy GF foods there (inc frozen stuff), it's either in the 'diets' section or the normal frozen area. This page from the Coeliacs in Madrid will help you about general foods (it's in English): www.celiacosmadrid.org/actualidad_19.html and you can print out a proper restaurant translation card to show in places (don't trust Google translators - they tell the restaurant you can eat Petrol!!. Posted by Ally on GF board We have just returned from the Riu Club Hotel Gran Canaria All Inclusive in Meloneras with our 4 year old boy who is coeliac and I would highly recommend it for anyone. The meals were individually prepared for him each day, I could choose what he fancied eating and the chefs prepared it specially. Our waiter was aware of cross contamination and was wonderful.... Fantastic food with no worry. Excellant! www.discounthotelreservation.org ... anaria.htm ***************************************************************************************** Re: gran canaria Posted by Gonzo on 9/1/2010, GF board I have had a timeshare on Gran Canaria at Bahia Feliz , San Augustin, Bluebay Beach Club and have had it since 1998. The island as far as I am concerned is the best of the Canaries. A lot will depend on your holiday ie, self catering to full board, we go self catering where there is a Carrefour at Atlantic City where we shop as locals do. The resort of Puerto Rico is very hilly the same with Amadores, Arguineguine is industrial, Puerto Mogan very picturesque. There is a waterpark if you have children also Palmitos Park has botanical gardens and a small zoo. For shopping there are many Centres the one we tend to use is the Jumbo which is at Playa Del Inglis, there is a restaurant called La Camelia where you can eat as much as you like for a fixed fee which is very resonably priced, opposite a chinese restaurant these I have had no problem with. Maspalomas is a new development of hotels springing up with many resaurants and cafe's. You can get to the main beach at Maspalomas from Maspalomas or the Playa Del Inglis end and before you get to the beach there are many restaurants many of which understand the gluten/wheat free problem. 1,000metres along the beach from both ends is the naturist areas (thought I should warn you.) For an evening out I can recommend Sioux City (San Augustin)which has a cowboy theme and also a barbecue (optional). Transport around the island: if your party is about four it is cheaper by Taxi if only two then the buses are great value. ...... ******************************************************************* Puerto de Mogan, Gran Canaria Posted by Tracy on 24/6/2010 GF board I have just had a holiday to Gran Canaria and visited Puerto de Mogan on market day. I had a lovely experience at The Irish Tavern (Bar Irish Tavern Restaurante, irish-tavern@internet.com). I explained my cd to the Irish lady who served me, and both she and the chef were already aware, as they knew people with the condition. After enquiring about the chips and cross contamination, I was told the oil was used for other things, but the chef cooked me some separately in a different pan. How's that for service! It's the little things that make your day isn't it, like someone making a small effort like that where most just wouldn't bother. *************************

Gran Canaria Posted by fiona on 3/8/2004,GF board Just returned from a wonderful week staying at The Riu Palace Meloneras, Gran Canaria. I had no gluten free meal on my flights with Monarch despite ordering them and it being on all my documentation. The hotel was fantastic and I did take alot of food with me and brought it all back as well!! Dad scanned the spanish phrases from the Coeliac World Travel Guide Book and on my first night I waved it under the waiters nose!! They understood instantly and my dinner roll was removed and they produced gluten free bread instead, they actually had it in stock in the kitchen!! Why can't British Hotels be like this!! All my meals I ordered the night before and I could choose what ever I liked and it was cooked for me. They even brought in spaghetti and macaroni so I could eat like everyone else on the Italian Themed night!! I had gluten free bread for breakfast and at lunch time the chef at the pool restaurant was only too happy to make me a toasted cheese and ham sandwich, just like my friends but with gluten free bread!!! They even noticed that I was eating rice pudding and creme caramel for dessert and enquired if I liked that dessert and for the rest of the week both puddings were on the dessert menu!! They couldn't have been any nicer and I would definitly recomend this hotel, as it is I am planning when to go back . *************************************** 212.161.124.21/book/hotel_desc.a ... 0Meloneras *************** Re: holiday in grand canaria Posted by paul madrid on 17/8/2007 Gf board Here is a list of the El Corte Ingles Shops (a bit like M&S) who will have a separate place for GF food (normally near the supermarket in the basement), but also have a restaurant that should serve GF pizzas and pastas. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Avenida José Mesa y López, 18 Tel.: 928 263 000. Fax: 928 276 814 Restaurante: 928 226 449 Centro Comercial Siete Palmas Avda. Pintor Felo Monzón, s/n Tel.:928 423 000. Fax: 928 422 055 Restaurante: 928 423 000 I'm including a link to the supermarket chain MERCADONA. They are the best for GF foods (normal foods like meats, cheeses, and they also sell some GF bread and biscuits). Everything is clearly marked GF. Their ice creams are to DIE FOR! Link: www.mercadona.es/corp/esp-html/l ... id_prov=35 ****************** Re: holiday in grand canaria Posted by AliG on 17/8/2007 GF board Try this address for some details: www.celiacosmadrid.org/direccion ... antes.html , more information in the web page: www.celiacosmadrid.org We returned on Sunday from Puerto Mogan. It wasn't easy to eat out. They were not geared up for coeliacs. The choices were plain grilled fish and meat. Avoid the chips as they are cooked in the same oil as gluten foods. Even the flan contained gluten (the dessert like creme caramel). We used the restaurant cards. One waitress knew about CD as she had a relative with it. She brought out the ice cream label for us to read. We went to a good restaurant where they provided us with GF bread (we had booked and discussed in advance). It was expensive though, but good. Gran Canaria update Posted by Louisa on 18/7/2011
GF board
I thought I would update you on my first experience of a holiday abroad since I was diagnosed. We stayed at the IFA Caterina Hotel, in Playa del Ingles. My experience was a good one, and my worries evaporated after a few days. They supplied bread rolls, on demand which were like crusty rolls. I had one with my breakfast everyday, I just have to ask a chef and wait 5 mins.(I had yogurt and fruit while I waited)At dinner I had a good choice, there was fresh griddled meat and fish and sometimes paella. There was a roasted meat choice as well Unfortunately most of the sauces were unsuitable, but one occasion when I asked about the suitability of some kebabs he fetched my some from the kitchen before they were covered in sauce. I was even given had a whole spit roasted chicken one evening when I asked if was ok! They also stocked pasta(available on demand)and the pasta sauce was gf. All the ice cream was gluten free and there was a lot of fresh fruit. They also had mousses and flan(creme Caramel)I didn't feel like I was missing out and the chefs were very helpful, even though their english was limited. I had no problems and not glutened once.(although eating your own body weight in fruit veg and salad can have an effect!)

Posted by Paul in Madrid on 21/3/2012, 14:13:16 213.4.22.x Hi everyone, Have just seen this article online (Google can translate I'm sure) about a new chain of shops that stock GF in the Canary islands in Spain: lavozdetenerife.com/not/11896/hip...._los_celiacos / There are 54 in Gran Canaria, 36 in Tenerife, 15 in Lanzarote, 6 in Fuerteventura y 3 in La Palma. Hope it's useful for the self-caterers out there. Writing / Voice of Tenerife Gluten intolerance is a disease that can manifest at any stage of life through different symptoms, which often lead to confusion in diagnosing the disease, especially since the first complaints, since the effects of such intolerance can manifest in different ways such as weight loss, diabetes mellitus, fractures, epilepsy and others. This makes such intolerance, celiac makes us take a magnitude difficult to assess. According to medical studies, at present only 10% are diagnosed with celiac disease who are really suffering this disorder. It is also estimated that 20% of unknown origin have neurological celiac disease behind, like 10% of osteoporosis cases or 20% of children who are thought to have a hormone disorder growth. It is therefore increasingly urgent to offer this population a range of food products that offer the necessary guarantees and, knowing this, those responsible for HiperDino have increased and improved the number of products for celiacs, both in quantity and quality they have in their shelves. In 114 chain stores HiperDino can find gluten-free products supported by FACE (Federation of Celiac Spain) 54 are in Gran Canaria, Tenerife 36 in 15 in Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and 3 6 in La Palma. HiperDino Products has added to its food supply bear the logo of the spike mark that identifies them as food quality and safety and is currently valued by coeliacs. It has also created specific zones for the implementation of these benchmarks in order to provide the best to its customers location within their supermarkets. It is also intended to HiperDino continue to evolve with your special gluten-free range in order to adapt fully to the needs of this group that, on occasion, expressed his difficulty in acquiring these products. Celiac disease is a permanent intolerance to gluten in wheat, barley, rye and probably oats, hence the importance of the 20 references HiperDino provides for bread, sweets, pasta and bread, which opened an important reference range of textures and flavors that do not mean to be celiac deprived of a varied diet. HiperDino has also 6 References for frozen: baguetinas, bread, tuna mini-pie, pizza, candy arm, arm and yolk truffle toast. Any scenario in which to choose, offered by the brand Proceli, a leading provider of market that is exclusively dedicated to the development of specific products for celiac fully guaranteed and protected by seals prestige and Free Gloten Islands. Both brands are supported by the Federation of Associations of Celiac Spain (FACE). For those responsible for HiperDino is crucial to provide an adequate response at all times to the different needs of enterprise customers, "hence we work constantly to keep completing offers that took our lines". What is FACE? The Federation of Celiac Spain (FACE), the body that supports the quality of products for celiac HiperDino has on sale, was legally constituted on June 27, 1994 with state scope, nonprofit organization. The FACE is composed of 17 federations / associations of celiac regional character. The main objective of this Federation is to coordinate the effort and the work of the member associations to defend their rights with a view to unity of action and to better achieve common goals. « Last Edit: Today at 8:46pm by Trevor » Read more: coeliac.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=canary&thread=3225&page=1#ixzz1pmp1oUZu

Gran Canaria - brilliant holiday Posted by Pam, Dorset on 12/5/2013, 16:38:49
I, and others, have praised the Canaries for gf holidays and this holiday was excellent. We stayed at the Cordial Mogan Valle appartments in Puerto de Mogan on a half board deal. Excellent spacious appartments, pretty resort, good transport by bus or boat to other places so you can easily do without a hire car - but for me the big plus point was the food. I had emailed in advance to ask about gluten free food and had a reassuring email back. On the first night the chef went round the buffet telling me what I could eat and then said they would cook me some chips in uncontaminated oil which arrived a few minutes later, a huge portion. Every day 2 sorts of meat and 2 types of fish were grilled to order so apart from the other stuff on the buffet I always had choice. I was told to request gluten free pasta but a couple of days later, without me having asked, the chef brought me a delicious huge bowl of gf spaghetti with prawn and tomato sauce. So I asked another night and got some with a pepper sauce. For dessert there was always fresh fruit, flambeed fruit which I had with ice cream (the chef couldn't guarantee the ice cream but I risked it and was fine), usually flan (the creme caramel sort) and cheeses. Every breakfast I was brought a warm crisp gf baguette which was a real treat. After a couple of days they said they also had gf cereal, cookies and cake - all of which I tried once I knew they were available, though I didn't need them as the breakfast buffet is vast. I have told them they should inform coeliac guests exactly what they have as we just assume there isn't anything. So, the food made my holiday - especially as the Kalisa ice cream you get in Gran Canaria (and other Spanish places)marks those suitable for coeliacs (most of them) and even has no added sugar ice creams which suited my diabetic husband. One was even gf AND no added sugar. We didn't eat out much as got snack lunches in the appartment most days - the supermarkets did have some gf products, Spar having most but I'd taken rolls and crackers. Everywhere did omelettes. On a trip to Playa Amadores I noticed a restaurant advertising gf pasta and went to enquire and they said they also had gf bread.Didn't try it as had a picnic but I think it was called Belice and was the first one in on the left if you are in the middle of the beach facing the sea. So if you are wary of going away now you are coelaic please don't be - try the Canaries. I've now been to Tenerife, Lanzarote and Gran Canaria, most of them several times and have ALWAYS been well catered for at the hotels. And the weather was wonderful!!!
