My friend, Pat, has just returned from a holiday in Madeira and had a wonderful time. The food was delicious and the service excellent! She is 75 and newly diagnosed so it has been quite worrying for her as she is also diabetic. She went armed with a Portuguese translation and had no problems being served gluten-free food that was also suitable for a diabetic. Although she tried to find the health food shop that sold Schar products she was unsuccessful - sent to a Scholls shop instead! - she had obviously managed to communicate her requirement for bread. She found a baker that made fresh gf bread and cakes. It quite made her holiday. She is to post the information to me for the Supp board.
The BAD thing about the holiday (which she said quite spoiled it) was the journey to and from Madeira. Airline?? Air 2000!! Quote: "It was quite distressing watching my huband and other people tucking into a hot meal when I had to have cold toast and a banana. For a diabetic who must eat the right meals at the right time, it really upset me."
She is going to write to Air 2000 to let them know how upetting it was.

She said ' holidaying on the island is no problem for coeliacs. The food is excellent and in the restaurants there is every help for people on gf diets. More and more Maderians are being diagnosed with coeliac.'
O'TONEL RESTAURANT - Welsh owner, made own sauce for the knuckle of pork which 'is to die for'. Said which of the dishes on the menu she could have.
She said the same system happened in all the restaurants. Crem Caramel pudding is ok and delicious, made on the premises. (I think she meant O'Tonels)
O'CHEF - again English speaking. Every help, makes his own pudding, pineapple in a maderian sauce which is fine.
MOBY DICK - English not as good but asked for a waiter who spoke English and from then on had every help. No puddings on the menu that were gf so he made one specially
BAKERY - Fabio S.to Antonia, Tavessa do Forno 27 29, Tel (91) 220255. He makes gf bread daily but better to go in the morning as it is either sold out or they freeze it (which is fine) but it doesn't freeze very successfully in the small hotel ice cube freezer! She said the bread was delicious!
Schar health food shop sell gf biscuits and crackers (I think I put that info on the supp board before Pat went to Madeira.)
She also found the Portugese translation very useful too. I'll try and scan it for you if you need one, but I know Lyn G has other links to translations that might be more useful.
