Here are some infos on Hamburg, Germany, for anyone planning to travel here. ( very ceap Ryan Air flights to Hamburg-Lübeck, 1 hr. bus ride to Hamburg Central Station.)
In general, the steakhouse chain " Blockhouse " is safe, including the salad dressing and sour cream for their baked potatoes, there is an awareness there, but still ask to check if what you have chosen is really gf.
There is a chain " Soupcity" (www.soupcity.de) with only ( delicious) soups on the menu, changing their menu weekly, always listing which soups of the week are gf, lf etc.
Then there is a chain called " Schweinske" with good awareness, their pubs mostly around the university area or the inner city.
Macdondals in Germany prepares french fries in a separate deep-fat fryer, most icecream sundaes are ok, for the other products they sometimes change the recipe, so you have to check on the homepage which is always up-to-date.
Nearly every ice cream from " Langnese" is gf except for the ovious ones in cones or with wafers which are not. There are some icecream parlour chains with gf icecream such as Janny`s and Mövenpick, but be careful that the person serving you does not accidentally put a wafer on top because mostly they don`t know about the problem.
For people who cater for themselves: every healthfood store ( called " Reformhaus" ) has a shelf with a variety of gf products, including various packed breads, not fresh. The big supermarket chain " Famila" does deep-frozen " DS Food" products like pizza, tortellini, pastry, very good toast + lots of dry DS products like noodles, cornflakes, biscuits etc.
The supermarket chain " Toom" has a range of about 20 dry " Glutano" products, but they are hidden in the drugstore department of the shop next to the slimming diet products.
Fresh bread can only be ordered at certain bakeries 3-4 days in advance, mostly delivered on Thursdays or Fridays.
There is a German forum www.zoeliakie-treff.de with a lot more helpful information, where you can ask questions and a lot of the members can answer in English. one of the sections is organised according to the postal code numbers, 1... being the Belin area, 2... araound Hamburg and the North, to 9... in the very south.( Munich 8...). there you find a lot of restaurant, hotel and shop recommendations locally collected.
The German Celiac Society www.DZG-online.de has an English page as well and offers you a little "note for the chef" in German to explain your needs in any retaurant. They also publish a list of about 35000 standard products which are gf without being specially produced for these needs which makes shopping much cheaper.
Aldi has a lot of naturally gf products but unfortunately no comprehensive list of these, only very few articles are marked with the sign.
Hamburg is well worth a visit, beautiful, busy city, with a lot of attractions and many English speaking people. So if anyone wants more detailed infos, you can contact me directly at muewie@t-online.de
