I just thought i would share with you my latest experience in egypt as a coeliac i recently stayed at the World Caribbean resort in Soma bay (went via Thomas Cook)(just before the recent problems started) on our first day i found the rep and explained my position (they were aware of coeliac ,sort of)she took me to reception and asked to speak to the head maitre d'it.he seemed unsure ,but we explained everything and over the course of the next few hours i met the chef ,the manager and other staff, and if there was nothing i could have ,they cooked me chicken ,beef and quail etc from their chargeable room service menu.they treated me like a princess and even brought my husband the same meals sometimes so he did not feel left out.!!i was waited on hand and foot. also after these discussions a notice regarding allergies appeared on the door to the restaurant ,not just regarding coeliac ,but also milk ,peanuts etc, also more precise labelling appeared by the diiferent dishes, specifying what each contained. i was not ill once and i would happily go back again. incidentally Thomas Cook also gave me a baggage allowance of 5kg for me to take breads etc away with me ,and i kept everything in the fridge in our room.

Italy - a ramble

GF board
Just got back from our first package ski holiday deal in many a year. Since being GF have only ever gone self catering but whilst researching booking ourselves again we emailed several hotels in the resort about catering for GF. Several responded favourably and the tour company could do it cheaper than booking separately ourselves so we chose to go to one of half board in one of the hotels that said they would cater.
There was a buffet style anti pasti at evening meals. Which to be honest I was full from, but then there was a selection of 3 starters, 3 mains and several sweets, to choose for the following night. The waitress told me what I could and couldn't choose and my food was served up separately each night. They provided me with my own bread, they served me the pre-thickened soup (just as tasty) and the pre-thickened braised meat. They cooked me my own pasta and could not have been more helpful. It was really delightful and made my holiday. It was only a basic 3 star hotel but was great. I'd taken my own bread for lunches, some porridge and some home made flapjack as it travels and keeps well in just about all temps. oh and some M&S GF fruit cake. Great on the slopes with the hot wine!
Italy doesn't "do" cider, so I've had plenty of Aperol spritz, bombardinos, hot wines, rum punch. In fact I'm missing my alcoholic booster at about 11 a.m. wouldn't go down too well at work I don't think.
Down side - went shopping in Manchester on Monday, intending to go to Dough Pizza for tea, and they had blummin shut at 3:30
I never ever thought years ago that I would go on a package deal half board. But I've done it and it was great! GF meal on the plane as well (I don't fly well, and to eat as well as fly is a major undertaking, but I did that too) … We booked with Thomas Cook (Thomson Airlines I think), flew to Verona. Tour operators in resort were Crystal, Hotel was Hotel Gardenia in Passo Tonale. Good beginners resort, good progression route to intermediate, and more advanced stuff if a mixed party. Not the prettiest resort (road and hotels) and not as beautiful as the Dolomites but does the job for cheapish (are ski hols ever cheap?!) ski hol. We went week before easter as lift passes were free. It's a high resort (glacier for experts) so snow sure late season. I think lessons are cheapish in resort too.Italian army were learning when we were there. All the men and the instructors were really ugly (looked like they'd all stepped off an armani catwalk).

Back from SUNNY SPAIN!!! (Thomas Cook holidays)
Posted by Nicola (Ess ex) on 1/6/2004 GF board
A stress-free holiday - GF diet wise, and I'm still smiling about it!! Thomas Cook airlines were brilliant! Both on outwards and return flight. They booked our seats for us (no extra fee), and had meals ready for Jasmine (outwards - lifestyle brown roll, salmon provencale, fruit salad, and a box of raisins. Coming home - lifestyle brown roll, roast chicken meal, garlic flavour rice cake, fruit salad, and raisins).
We stayed in the Port Aventura hotel in Salou. The head waiter worked as interpreter between the chefs and us (although we did have one of those dietary cards printed up in Spanish), and there was at least a third of the buffet that was gluten free most nights. If not, the chefs would cook something else for Jasmine (pasta), and nothing was too much trouble. In fact, whilst we were there, they decided to get in touch with some companies that make GF food, and get samples sent, which Jasmine then tried to see if they were nice and tasty to eat. They are now thinking of getting GF food in straight from the manufacturers, as they are getting requests for GF food about once a week now, if not a bit more, so it would be more worthwhile!
Therefore, the holiday was stress-free (well as much as it can be with two ankle-biters), and hats off to both Thomas Cook, and Port Aventura hotel.
Definately worth a visit - especially if you like Theme Parks as there is one attached to the hotel - with the only 8 loop rollercoaster in Europe!

Posted by Margret on 9/10/2004 GF board Benidorm, Spain - Thomas Cook Airlines Had a lovely gluten free meal on both journey's with thomas cook airlines. This was the best gluten free meals that i have had on any airlines as on others you don't get a proper meal. I have been on aircrafts where there has been no gluten free meals. We stayed at the marina hotel the meals were buffet service which was excellent. If there was nothing that i liked they would make me somthing that i liked. the staff were realy helpfull and new about gluten free food. we had a great time at the hotel.I would recommend this hotel to everyone. we liked it that much that we are booked up to go back next year www.fact-index.com/t/th/thomas_c ... lines.html www.holidayhotels.com/hotel.php? ... a%20Blanca)%20
