eating out Posted by tracy co. durham on 20/12/2005 Gf board last thursday i went to the SLUG AND LETTUCE in Newcastle for a xmas party / meal. when we arrived we were ushered into the back room as other parties were due to arrive. we had a waiter who was lovely. i was given a GF Meal (ribbed eye steak and veg with an onion sauce - yumm. my colleagues all choose canopies. my meal was lovely, no after effects. my colleagues complained as there chicken and other meats were under cooked. also upon arriving we were offered a bottle of wine for £10 instead of £15.25, which my colleagues brought. however upon ordering the second bottle we were told it was a mistake and the offer was only for Gateshead council as they had a party of 150 people and not 16 like us. the manageress' attitude was disgusting. hence we left immediately after the meal was finished. we were unsure if to tell the manageress that we were actually from another local council!!!! well all in all i quite ENJOYED BEING A COELIAC as i had no complaints about my meal and also i dont drink wine!!! it definately sometimes pays to be different!! GF board
Have just been to the panto there and we ate in their restaurant - McKenna's. They were fab. My 8 year old had a great meal thanks to the waitress who was recently diagnosed with coeliac and checked everything with the chef. They serve excellent tapas - huge variety and also childrens meals, sandwiches etc. They get very busy downstairs but you can book a table upstairs. The waitress is doing a great job educating all the staff about coeliac too. Panto was fab too.

Newcastle Race Course
Posted by Laura on 17/8/2009 GF board ...
Just wanted to let you know how fantastic Newcastle Race Course was on Friday when I was there.
I had been invited through work to attend the Water Aid Race Day and had informed them that I was Coeliac but also allergic to fish.
All of the waiting staff and chefs were fantastic especially when you consider there were at least 300 people in the restaurant let alone the private boxes etc.
I was given a starter of melon with passion fruit and strawberries as it was supposed to be fish and they also brought me over my own GF bread bun, I was told to make the buffet staff when I went up that I was GF and they were very well informed and polite I was pointed to everything that I could eat (which was loads of stuff) and they even offered to make me some GF gravy.
When it then got to afternoon tea they came out with a selction of gf scones, cake and biscuits for me and some gf crackers to go with the cheese board I was very impressed and absoloutely over the moon that I was not made to feel like I was being left out and some kind of weirdo.
Nothing seemed to be to much trouble for any of the staff and it was an absoloute joy having such a hassle free afternoon out where I was well and truely spoilt without having to worry and explain myself.
I have dropped them an email thanking them and the effort they went to but thought it really needed to be shared with a bigger audience.
Well done Newcastle Race Course and Staff vee

Newcastle Uni - any info appreciated

GF board
…..- we have lived 15 miles north of Newcastle for the past 3 years and I would say that it is not the most GF aware place. There is a Nandos and La Tasca in Newcastle however we dont eat out often so there may be many more. When we have eaten out I have found staff to be helpful but not always GF aware. There is no coeliac UK group either in Newcastle or Northumberland though I know from this board Vee's group south of the Tyne have done loads of work with reataurants etc. What I have found good are the independent shops and farmers markets (excellent produce) and the willingness of some farmers to make GF produce, such as sausages, stuffing etc. Morrisons is the most common (and useless for GF!) supermarket in the North East but there are Tesco, Asda and Sainsbury's are opening new stores too. Sadly there is no Waitrose in Newcastle yet…...

GF board
…..I am linked with the College of St Hild and St Bede at Durham Uni (which currently has a full-board policy) and am catered for very well when I attend functions. When students arrive with dietary requirements, the kitchen staff try very hard to cater for them. Students notify College before arrival and also discuss diet with the head chef. I don't know what happens at Newcastle and whether they would be so accommodating.
Eating out in Newcastle is a lot better than it used to be. Most places I have contacted have been great. There are a lot of Indian, Chinese and Italian eateries. My favourite is La Riviera which is on the Gateshead side of the Swing Bridge.
M&S has a huge food hall and is based in the centre of the city as is Fenwick's. When I ate in John Lewis a couple of years ago, one of the kitchen staff had just been diagnosed coeliac and brought me some of her bread to go with my gf soup. I have heard positive comments since then about their attitude.
I find that when I get a good reception from a restaurant, I go regularly and build up a rapport with the staff. …...

Gf board
Went to Landmark Chinese restaurant in Newcastle - Stowell Street, last night. Had a fab meal Chicken and sweetcorn soup, crispy duck - with iceberg lettuce to wrap it in, sweet and sour chicken, hot spicy beef, prawn something or other (I had a few drinks!) and special fried rice. They used gf soy sauce and potato starch. No ill effects and it was soooo nice. My husband said he thought I was going to lick the plates clean! How would he feel though if he hadnt had a chinese for 18 years!!!! If anyone is going, make sure you book and speak to the english speaking guys, who know what they are talking about. the waiting staff didnt understand too well and we were going to leave until he came to speak to us. Yum Yum

Eating out in Heaton Newcastle Posted by Coeliac in Newcastle upon Tyne on 30/5/2011, 16:14:09 I often go to the Sky Apple Cafe on Heaton Road. It is a vegetarian restaurant which has gluten free dishes on the menu. They change their menu every two months. On the current menu there are two gluten-free starters and two mains (out of only about six dishes). No specific gf puddings but their ice-cream is gluten-free. They have also always been very accommodating about adapting dishes, making main versions of starters etc. They can be slow but everything is freshly cooked and the food is delicious (even if you're normally a meat-eater.) The Indian Amuse Bouche starter on the current menu is fantastic. No licence, so take your own wine or beer. www.skyapple.co.uk/Sky apple cafe NewcastlePosted by gluten free in newcastle on 1/12/2011, 8:52:16 The Sky Apple Cafe's Christmas menu has a good proportion of gluten free options. I went last night and had the goat cheese starter and curry main, both of which was delicious. Then the chef also made me a gluten free drop scone pud which wasn't advertised as GF. Wonderful www.skyapple.co.uk/evening.php

It is from the French Oven and it is made from spelt flour, which contains only a tiny amount of gluten and the bread itself contains only a small amount of yeast, which is better for those of us prone to candida. It was delicious and I had quite forgotten what bread tasted like, and oh the joy of cheese on toast after all these years! http://http//:www.frenchoven.webs.com

Crusoes Tynemouth Posted by gluten free in newcastle on 16/8/2012, 13:05:42
Just had a lovely unhealthy breakfast at Crusoes at the end of beautiful Tynemouth Longsands. I had bacon, egg, tomatoes and mushrooms which are all grilled or fried separately plus gluten free bread and a biscuit to go with my coffee. They also have gluten free muffins which looked delicious. The staff couldn't have been more helpful.

Portofino - Newcastle Posted by Donna on 2/6/2014 Gf board www.portofinonewcastle.co.uk/Visited Newcastle upon Tyne recently and decided to eat before leaving for the day, we found Portofino Italian Restaurant while on route back to the car, the menu outside had GF marked on the menu so it looked promising. We went inside and got a table and did the usual is it really GF, cooked separately etc. They did warn that everything is prepared in the same kitchen although they do their best to keep everything separate but do have separate fryers/pans etc. I had a sauted chicken, on herb mashed potato with a jus and panacotta for desert, it was really good. The menu was similar to Zizi, pasta, pizza, risotto and other mains but with more choices and cheaper. When I enquired about desert the waiter said he was unsure what was suitable so 'if I didn't mind waiting a couple of minutes he'd get another waiter to come and discuss my needs' Honesty is the best policy, I definitely go back.£62 for 3 x mains, 3 x deserts, 2 glasses of wine and 2 large cokes.
