A real GF sweet treat Posted by davidmc on 5/2/2007 GF board I visited Bushmills (yes the place where the whisky is made) garden centre yesterday and was delighted to find four separately wrapped gluten free traybakes on offer, all individually wrapped. They had been made by one of the chefs in the cafe, himself a coeliac. They included chocolate brownies, fifteens, fruit cake and the mother of all delights, caramel chocolate shortcake with real thick milk chocolate on top of the toffee. The price was reasonable too. The sellophane wrapping kept them safe and my shortcake was just lovely, very homemade. I bought several to take away including one as a nice surprise for my coeliac work colleague. I wish more places were as good as this. So if any of you are planning to visit the north coast of Ireland and to see the Giant's causeway and Bushmills Distillery, the world's oldest - you will only be a few minutes away from traybake heaven. www.bushmills.com/Gateway/The Distillery, 2 Distillery Rd, Bushmills - 028 2073 1521

Good GF near the Giant's Causeway

Gf board
If any of you are visiting the Giant's Causeway on the north coast of Northern Ireland you will be pleased to hear that you can get GF food quite easily close by in and around Bushmills village. The Copper Kettle cafe does Gf baked potato with cheese and beans or chilli con carne. The celebrated Bushmills Inn can provide GF meals. Smugglers Inn, the closest to the Causeway, makes everything fresh and the staff I spoke to were very knowledgeable about cross contamination etc. You can also get GF food in Distillers Arms in Bushmills and almost certainly in Bushmills restaurant Sixteenoeight. You can also buy GF sausages from one of the butchers on Main Street Bushmills. If you are close by in nearby Portrush the Ramada hotel can offer GF meals on request and a choice of three specific GF desserts on the menu including a rhubarb and strawberry crumble and pear with homemade choc biscuits and vanilla ice cream.
