Phoned ready to go through the rigmorole of explaining CD/GF etc. Lady on the phone had heard of CD and knew it meant not eating wheat, and *they are sending me their menu for coeliacs (which seems to already exist and be readily available) by email this afternoon*. They're slightly upmarket, but someone else is paying and I'm just so impressed that they already seem to have GF options sorted

Notcutts Garden Centre, who have been quietly providing good gluten free food in their restaurant for some time, have now started to offer gluten free cookies (Byron Bay, NSW) and gf/wheatfree cake (various recipes) didn't get the name, but the company is in Belfast). Worth supporting if you're in the area. Steve www.notcutts.co.uk/Information/Garden-Centres/Oxford/C

Re: Oxford Posted by Charlotte, oxford on 11/2/2006 ... Some good French ones inc Le Petit Blanc with a separate GF menu but in Walton St about 10 mins walk from centre. There's a La Tasca in the new Prison castle complex, which are OK and labelled GF but not great food, good for a snack (BTW the new upmarket Living Room also there has had terrible reviews). Quod (bistro in the Old Bank Hotel) in the High St is a safe bet (ask for chef to identify GF options), food not as good as Petit Blanc but central and nice location (away from fairly horrendous George Street area which I don't recommend unless you are very youthful and up for it); tables rather close if you want to be "intime". Some good Indian's out of the centre (Aziz, Cowley Road, must book). Chiang Mai (off High St) is a very good Thai in lovely setting but I was not able to get an interesting GF meal there. You need to book everywhere in Oxford during term time. La Tasca 5 Oxford Castle, OX1 1AY Tel: 01865 246464 Web: www.latasca.co.uk The original La Tasca Spanish Tapas Bar & Restaurant opened in Manchester city centre in 1993 and is as popular as ever. Since then we have successfully opened our distinctive style of restaurants throughout the UK from Glasgow to Portsmouth and Bristol to Norwich. Re: Oxford Posted by Charlotte, Oxford on 24/4/2006 I sent this info to visiting Americans recently. TRAVEL Oxford You will find it quite easy to find gluten-free in Oxford. In the UK GF food is usually in the Freefrom Section. Most foods now have to have allergy labels stating if they have wheat or gluten, (or egg milk etc) The small Tesco’s in the Cowley Road has best range of FreeFrom Foods in Oxford. Especially good are their GF pitta bread, garlic naan bread, hot cross buns, chocolate muffins. Coconut shortbread also v good. Their bread is quite popular. The sweet soft rolls do not need heating. Their brown rustic rolls are not bad. You may want to pay them a visit if you are looking to take GF food back with you (such as tamari sauce). There are two small Sainsbury’s in town but the one in Magdalen Street (near the Randolf Hotel) does not have a Freefrom Section. Their labelling is good for crisps [chips], chocolate etc. Holland and Barrett (health food shop) in the Golden Cross (next to Pizza express) has a goodish range but more expensive. Probably the best located. Sells tamari sauce. Marks and Spencers does not have a Freefrom Section but their foods are very well labelled for allergies. Anything without an allergy labelling for gluten is safe. They have good snacks (chips etc), and a very good GF chocolate and orange cake (in a box with their regular cakes). (It’s worth asking for this as they are very good). Some ready made rice salads and desserts etc in their chill cabinets. Eating out. Basically you will get GF meals at all upmarket brasserie/bistro type restaurants if you make clear your needs. Walton Street (just north of centre has a better selection of restaurants than the centre of Oxford. Petit Blanc, Walton Street has a separate GF menu including puddings so may be the easiest, and amongst the best. Branca also in Walton Street is slightly cheaper and has a great value set price 2 course menu for lunch or before 7pm. (eg excellent organic salmon salad starter and risotto for £10) BTW the Phoenix Cinema opposite Branca Walton St sells the lovely Honeybuns www.honeybuns.co.uk/index.htm cakes most of which are GF. I really recommend the Brownie. These are excellent longlife gluten and wheat free – you may want to take some back with you. Quad in the High Street and will identify GF meals. The food is slightly disappointing but it has a great location. The Asmolean Museum has quite a nice café restaurant in the basement. La Tasca in the Old prison has GF tapas identified Most curries in Indian restaurants are OK. Ask what has wheat. If you decide to venture into the “colourful” Cowley Road there are good Indian restaurants and Kazbar has GF identified tapas, good for lunch or a light snack (bit smoky at times).

Oxford La Cucina Posted by Mandy on 22/8/2007 GF board I have visted this restaurant three times in the last month as I was so impressed! They do rice pasta which is gluten and wheat free and will serve it with any of their pasta dishes. They have a good awareness of what is gluten free. The restaurant is relaxed and has a nice atmosphere and the food is lovely. They have a website: www.lacucinaoxford.co.uk/index.htm --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I went to Fishers in St Clements, Oxford on saturday night, and they were fantastic. When I called them up beforehand they understood Coeliacs and did not need to explain anything to them. It was for a party so we had a limited menu, but I was able to choose from 3 out of the 6 starters and mains. All staff understood CD, made for a very pleasent evening. the food was lovely too. There was GF non-fish and vegetarian available too....

…We live near Oxford so can tell you that Fratelli's is fabulous. They do great gf pizza, pasta and my daughters absolute favourite chocolate fondue! Also in Oxford try Branca's on Walton Street. They are pretty good about gf food and although no gf pizza or pasta, there are other gf alternatives on the menu. You can also try Las Iguanas in Oxford, they have lots of gf items on the menu and it's a really fun place to eat. There is also a Carluccios in the Castle area and they also do gf pasta and other gf dishes. Although I haven't tried it I am told that there is a Chinese Restaurant in Summertown that does cater for gf- but you would need to check with them first. There is also a Jamies Italian on George Street in Oxford and I believe they can also cater for gf diets. Lastly, for quick cheap noodles there is a place called The Noodle Nation- which is just off George Street on the square and they also cater for gf diets. The food there is cheap and cheerful and is a good place for a quick lunch. …

Places in Oxford ... Eating out/microwavable food tips in Oxford ...
Posted by Liz GF board on 24/5/2010,
OK here is my quick guide to slap dash food eating in Oxford city centre.
Pret a Manger - two in the main road between Ashmolean Museum and Clarendon Centre.
- Look for the breadless sandwiches but beware of the dressings
Go a bit further down the road and you have M&S with a large food hall.
Start outside the main entrance to the Ashmolean facing the Randolph hotel and turn right walking away from St Giles. Go to the end of the road and bear left when it goes round the corner and you will find Nandos a short walk down there.
There is also a Loch Fyne a 10 min drive out at 55 Walton Street - and they are doing set meal for £10 between 12 and 7pm.
Again starting at the Ashmolean go to the corner where the Randolph is and walk towards Pret and the Clarendon centre and you will pass a Sainsburys on the right.

GF board
We recently had lunch at Atomic Burger on the Cowley Road and my daughter pronounced it the best burger ever. They serve gluten free buns, burgers with a huge variety of toppings and fries all gluten free. It's a small place so it does get busy.
Also Branca's on Walton Street- now serve gluten free pasta and lots of other gluten free dishes My husband and daughter have been recently and said it was really good and not too expensive.

Near disaster at Brasserie Blanc
Posted by Anna on 20/8/2013
GF board
Went to Oxford's Brasserie Blanc a few days ago. Fairly busy. Ordered from the GF menu (which also lists dairy free options). The waiter also found out which of the items on the 'Specials' board were suitable, Interestingly the GF menu was slightly different from the ordinary menu - I guess this means they have these options frozen but I though probably less risk of cross contamination. So far so good. But I was brought an ordinary version of the starter, by a server (not 'our' waiter). Luckily I asked rather than tucking straight in - the bread looked too yummy to be GF. They brought me my option fairly quickly - hot i.e. microwaved GF bread - although my partners meal had spoiled a bit (it involved a poached egg). The waiter was very apologetic. I also tried to mention it again on the way out, to emphasize how important it is - I wasn;t trying to get a bill reduction as my partner had already settled up - but suddenly everyone's English speaking skills seemed to have worsened and my French isn't too good! So same old, never take anything for granted, keep on checking!!
