We are going out to the Kings Head in Southend Rd tonight as I called them and they promised to cook something plain for my mum like chicken, bolied potatoes and veg and so we'll have to see how that goes down !!
I feel so sorry for her though as she really get's embarrassed and don't like a fuss or to ask for what she wants - it's a good job she has me !

I called the Kings Head the day before and spoke to someone in their kitchen to explain that we were coming along and my mum’s special diet and they were helpful and said that providing a plain meal would be no problem. On the night when it came to ordering I mentioned that I had spoken to someone and they remembered me which was good and I re-iterated that my mum would like a plain meal of chicken/bolied potatoes and veg - NO SAUCES OR GRAVY TO BE ADDED and again they said no problem. The meal arrived and was fine and my mum tucked in and enjoyed it as it made a change from jacket potato and cheese - which is the only thing she normally feels confident with ordering when eating out. So all in all, as they don't have a specific mention on their menu that they cater for coeliacs/special diets, they were more than accommodating and so at least we could go back there again sometime.

Reccomendation - Barleylands Farmers Market, Billericay

I went to the above event yesterday, held twice a month and I can't recommend it enough.

ALL the stall holders knew about gluten free diets, most of the butchers brought a variety of GF sausages, two stalls had gluten free cakes and biscuits (lemon, lemon and ginger, chocolate, and the most GORGEOUS buttery shortbread that came in plain, orange and mixed fruit, along with peanut cookies) but the fantastic thing was they KNEW. Even those who didn't have stuff knew, when I was asking about rusk, their responses were "are you looking for gluten free".

The biscuits were from "The Perfectly Delicious Company" - they make all their own stuff and also do muffins and savoury pies, which, because of market rules they can't sell there but you can contact them directly for an order. Their URL is www.perfectlydelicious.co.uk, the guy said they make all their own stuff, and eat it though they're not coeliacs and they won't sell anything that they wouldn't eat themselves. ........

What a selection here !!

 In my 16 years as a Silly Yak, I haven't been anywhere that's a patch on Billericay. I've noted here the shops I went in, there might be more.

If you visit by train, there's a Costa on platform 1.

From Billericay Station [if driving best to park in Waitrose - you only have to spend £5 in get ticket validated] - go through foyer, and turn right past ticket office into Radford Way.

Pizza Hut Delivery will be on your right as you walk along, obviously there are a lot of "chains" that we all know do GF anyway, regardless of location.

Turn right towards the High Street, past the Railway pub [not sure what food they do] and at the traffic lights Dominos will be on your right.

Cross [Western Rd] the road which takes you onto the High Street.

There are various eateries of course, but the foreign ones especially make no mention of GF - which says it all normally.

There's a Wetherspoons @ 39 High Street - the "Blue Boar".

Next stop up was "The Coffee Stop" @ no. 57 - they do plenty of GF food, especially cakes - and they share these premises with a record shop "Slipped Discs".

3 doors long is Pizza Express - I know they do GF, but they couldn't give me a menu.

A few steps further is "Ask - the Italian".

Iceland was my next stop, and as we all know, they don't have a free-form section - BUT......they do two frozen items that caught my eye - 10 Cheesy Potato Pockets [600g] for £1.50, which looked tasty, and, surprisingly, are GF ! Also, and if they're nice are an incredible bargain, is their "Thin & Crispy coated French fries" - only £1 for a hefty bag weighing 1.5 kg !!

There's Poundland just past the Red Lion, and apart from the masses of items which are GF, also sell healthy things such as walnuts now. Good to see.

If you then cross the road opposite "Cook" - it'll be worth getting a product list, which shows that about 70% of what they sell is now GF. Good to see too !!

100 yards along on the road, there's Waitrose -l rear entrance on the High Street. GF section is really good, selling a few items that I don't think the others do ? Have a deal on Schar products this week. They have Kirsty's pies in the chilled section, but strangely, no frozen GF section ??

Another 100 yards and there's Costa, which has a garden at the back too.

Then comes my favourite - GF chip shop !! It's Fishnchicken at no. 60 - a big sign's in the window saying "GF EVERY MONDAY / TUESDAY". As you go in the door, on the back of the sign is a list of the exact ingredients in every GF item on the menu. Very impressive. Then they have menus on the wall as LED type displays !!

Finally, the staff are brilliant - Chris the Manager is so efficient. Opens at 11am BTW.

A few yards past is Cupcakes - who don't just sell a GF cupcake - I think they'll do any sandwich too - which brings me on to................

Ravens Bakers - which is just past the Chequers pub across the zebra crossing. They'll do any sandwich in GF bread - from £2.10 to £3.50.

I think Harry's Bar next door do GF, but they told me to look on the website - cheers !!

Finally, another 100 yards and you're back at the Western Road traffic lights - where the last shop is Prezzo - who do a GF pudding - orange polenta cake - as well as GF pasta dishes / pizzas.
