* Just a note about opening times!
Nebraska, Vips, Hard Rock Café are open all day.
Other places usually open at between 12 midday and 1pm for lunch – until about 4pm and then maybe 8pm to midnight for dinner.
BURGER KING & McDONALD’S
Like in the UK, both of these places will make the burgers without bread. You need to ask for them ‘sin pan’. McDonalds have said that their normal fries and potato wedges are GF, so that cuts down the cross-contamination problems.
BURGER KING MUSTARD IS NOT GLUTEN FREE!
STARBUCKS
Unlike the UK there is nothing available for us to eat in Starbucks. There are many across the city but I haven’t put them on the map.
EL CORTE INGLES
The places I’ve marked on the map (2 central and 1 nearby) offer:
* In their restaurants (on the top floor), they offer pizzas and croquettes (made with béchamel not potato!) – but they are only the things they sell in the supermarket (i.e. nothing special).
* They have special dietary departments in the basements of each building next to the supermarket. They sell a wide range of packaged breads and cakes etc as well as frozen baguettes (quite palatable without reheating) .
SUPERMARKETS IN GENERAL
Food labelling is very good here, with a lot of ‘normal’ foods clearly marked as “Sin Gluten”, “Apto para Celiacos” or “Libre de Gluten”. A lot of cold meats, ham, Chorizo sausage etc are also available. Crisps are widely labelled as GF, although chocolate is a bit of a ‘grey’ area. Snickers are GF in Spain and in the ‘VIPS’ restaurant listed above they also sell a bit of British chocolate (Flakes and Crunchie mainly, although expensive).
The ‘Estrella Daura’ and ‘Ambar – para celiacos’ beers are also available in most supermarkets, but check the labels as they look very similar to non-gf types. I recommend ‘Ambar’ personally.
BREAKFASTS
Vips have a breakfast (which I’ve had before) of a toasted ham and cheese sandwich with a packet of crisps(?) and drink. Their other set GF meals are: ham and cheese pizza, Lasagna and for dessert, profiteroles. I had these a couple of years ago and all I can say is they’re small portions & a bit expensive.
However, in Nebraska, they have a wider range of things for lunch and dinner, but nothing for breakfast. They don’t carry any GF bread but something like ‘fried potatoes, ham and scrambled egg – mixed together’ (sorry, I wouldn’t know how to translate it and she gave me the Spanish GF menu card not the English!), would do as I breakfast, although it’s traditionally a meal. Nebraska have a much wider and appetising range and their GF menu looks nice, if a bit simple.
OTHER FOOD INFORMATION
The Madrid Coeliac Association has a page that is quite explanatory about what types of food are naturally GF. It’s in English.

The only thing is of course the cross-contamination.
However the restaurants I have listed (with the exception of the Hard Rock Café) have been certified as GF providers and hold a certificate from the Madrid Coeliac Association that they have undergone training in the handling of GF foods. Their menus are also checked for gluten content on a regular basis by the Association.
If you need any further information, feel free to leave a message on the GF board.
