Posted by Ayesha on 11/8/2009 Are you willing to go self catering or does it have to be a catered holiday? I know there are a couple of hotels in Italy (lake garda, near venice, also if you do some ground work I hear Rome could be good operaalbianco.blogspot.com/ its in Italian but just use google translate) who specialise in food for coeliacs.

From Emma B (edited by Lyn G) Hi folks, well, I just came back from Lake Garda, Italy after 2 sunny weeks eating & drinking in paradise. All the resturants we went to were helpful, two of them made pizza for me with my pizza bases, in the others the risotto was lovely (and we had NO problems after ANY of the meals) . I checked out the Italian coeliac website before I went and picked up a list of restaurants in the area I was going to, which 'do' GF, and the one we went to made GF pasta dishes for us & were really helpful for the rest of it and didn't charge extra or anything. We even had 2 glasses of Prosecco on the house! Best thing of all, thanks to Tom's note about Bi-aglut GF beer I even brought a CRATE of it back home to Germany - YEEESSSSSS! I was laughing all the way back to the hotel - there are people all over the world trying to make GF beer at home and in Italy you can get it from the chemists! And its lovely! Just like the real McCoy. Don't know whats going to happen when the crate is empty, guess I'll keep you posted... Happy & tanned, Emma ******************** Re: Holiday Lake Garda Posted by Sian north wales on 13/5/2007 GF board We stayed at the Hotel La Paul walking distance from Sirmione which caters for gluten free diets. Not grand but I wasn't complaining as they did fantastic gf pasta.(My evening meal was pasta first course and by my own choice for main course as well!) They were very aware of our dietary needs with your own basket of bread and breadsticks with the evening meal. At breakfast we had our own bar of bread etc. They even took my morning coffee off me as they had served the wrong one! Still pondering on that! Enjoy wherever you go. PS Fantastic choice of ice creams in Sirmione. ********************************* La Paul Hotel Sirmione - Garda Lake www.gardalake.it/hotellapaul Re: GF in Lake Garda Posted by Sian north wales on 26/5/2008 GF board .... A small hotel but the pasta was excellent. **************** Re: Holiday Lake Garda Posted by CathyK on 13/5/2007 Just come back from a week in Lake Garda staying at Hotel Gallo in Tignale You can book this holiday through Gilli's Holidays which is the ad in Crossed Grain. Hotel marvellous and caters for coeliacs well. Good choice of menus and if there is something you can't have they will happily make you an alternative. The owners Fulvia and Renate can't do enough to help. There is also a pizzeria next door which serves a selection of gf pizzas. Loved it so much we plan to go back next year.Tignale has a population of approx 1200 8 of whom are coeliac! Local pharmacy stocks gf products. www.hotelgallo.com/ ****************************** Lake Garda, Italy Posted by Juliana on 4/7/2009 GF board If you are in Peschiera (at the southernmost end of the Lake), there is a very popular pizzeria, called 'Bellavista', right beside the lake. They serve a huge variety of pizzas, 17 of which can be made gluten free. It's a real luxury to eat a 'proper', thin based pizza cooked in a wood burning oven! Also, if you are in Via Marzan, there is a pharmacy which has a very wide choice of gluten free foods, including frozen items. *****************************

Italy Posted by Rosie on 9/8/2004 GF board
Just come back from Italy (Lake Garda) and feel that if I can manage to be GF in the land of pizza and pasta I can manage just about anywhere. I have to say though that supermarkets I found were not much good - the only GF product I found in them were rice crackers, so I'm glad I took plenty of supplies of long-life bread etc with me. I never saw any GF pasta or pizza bases in the 3 supermarkets I went to. Eating in resturants was no problem though and several did my own pizza bases for me. We were self-catering and I wish I'd thought to take some stock cubes with me!

There is already a posting for this hotel but as we've just stayed there thought I'd add a few words. They are VERY coeliac aware and offer fresh gf bread and pasta, croissants (for breakfast) as well as various biscuits, breadsticks and even gf coffee (don't ask!). We even had gf battered fish one night (after some fresh ravioli). Well worth staying although a week in Sirmione is a bit long - I'd recommend 3 or 4 nights. If you stay there make sure you have a lake view room as the others can suffer road noise (or stay across the road at the Smeraldo which is more basic but quieter and owned by the same family). We went with Crystal Lakes & Mountains but the hotel takes direct bookings. www.hotellapaul.it/eng/LaPaul.htm

GF holiday Lake Garda Gf board 18/9/2006 This is the first time I have used this site so apologies if this is old news. We have just returned from a holiday in Lake Garda Italy at the hotel 'La Paul' Sirmione. They advertised GF catering but we were a bit apprehensive wondering if it would be a bit 'hit & miss' It was brilliant, they really have got it sorted, breakfast items are well apart from the non GF stuff and with clear notices stating for GF clients only. Special GF waiters are identified with a badge and main courses are served on square plates, bread baskets had a different colour napkin to non GF, GF menu was a different colour etc etc. We booked through Crystal holidays who were new to us but again were excellent. Gilli’s Holidays Resorts for Coeliacs With over 30 years of experience in the Travel business, always in Italy and with the last 3 with an Italian Tour Operator, it seemed the right time to select the Italian holidays myself and offer them on this new web site. And since I am based on Lake Garda what better place to start with than ‘my lake’ and 3 hotels on offer. An equal favourite is Tuscany, probably one of the most beautiful areas of Italy and again you have the choice of several hotels and apartments. Year 2005 was the beginning of a real challenge; finding hotels that cater for coeliacs and for those of you who need a gluten free diet, I hope that on Gilli’s Holidays you will find hotels and apartments suitable for your needs. The hotels that have chosen to join us in this initiative have all had coeliac guests in the past and have assured us that they will do everything possible to make your holiday an enjoyable one. Hopefully as we progress, more hotels will become available to you, thus giving you a bigger choice for your future holidays, and at the same time good value for money with discounted prices and special offers. At last an end to the difficulties that you may have had in the past finding suitable accommodation and the chance to book your holiday in hotels where you don't have to worry about explaining your gluten free diet. All the hotels shown in this section are all quite familiar with celiac requirements and have assured us that they will do everything possible to make your holiday an enjoyable one. The resorts listed are a mix of hotels offering bed & breakfast or half board and also some self catering apartments. Wherever possible, with the self catering we will give you names and addresses of shops selling gluten free products. All you need now is the time to take that holiday! www.gillisholidays.com/en/produc ... eliac=true
