Posted by Sarah on GF board Oaklands Hotel & Restaurant 89 Yarmouth Road, Thorpe St. Andrew, Norwich NR7 0HH Tel: 01603 434471 www.oaklands-hotel.co.uk Although we have not been here since Sophie was diagnosed, my friends husband is the chef for the restaurant, and if you telephone in advance, they will be able to provide GF meals. I think they can provide GF meals even if you don't phone, but it would be a very limited choice. Also the local Coeliac group use this hotel for annual get-togethers

www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/s/14/14982/Rosary_Tavern/NorwichRosary Tavern, Norwich - Rose of the week! Posted by Lucy -N.London on 1/5/2004, My jubilant (Norwich City Football Fan) husband has just returned from a day out at the football with our 5 year old daughter, equally jubilant, very tired and having received a gluten-free meal at the Rosary Tavern. They put a buffet on for 50 or so fans and knowing the usual state of affairs we contacted the pub in advance to see if they could provide for Gemma. We asked for a piece of oven cooked chicken, no sauces etc cooked in foil and a baked potato in foil... (she is only 5 and has not got very sophisticated tastes yet!) I sent her off with a picnic just in case... not required at all. The bar staff were completely on the case and her meal was fetched like magic. They were brilliant and we would like to recommend them for rose of the week. Link: www.rosarytavern.co.uk/

Norwich - Gluten Free bakery Posted by Tom (in Kent) on 27/11/2011, 20:35:48 Just back from a coach trip to the Thursford Christmas Spectacular Show (Excellent show), stopping overnight at the Norwich Hilton North Hotel, which is very aware of GF requirements (GF rolls available with soup, GF gravy prepared specially). We had a free morning in Norwich, where we found a completely gluten-free bakery (Rhubarb & Custard - see link below) in the Norwich Market. Talking to the sales people, they mentioned that a trial batch of a new Chocolate and Cherry Fruit cake was due out of the oven in a few minutes time. We returned after allowing 'cooling time' and made our purchase. Today I cut a slice and gave it a "10" - fruit cake consistence, full of choc chips and maraschino cherries. Unfortunately we live 160 miles from Norwich, so 3/4 of the cake has been frozen to make it last!! Their website is currently being updated. www.rhubarb-custard.com/

Rhubarb & Custard
Posted by Jan (Suffolk) on 28/11/2011
I went shopping in Norwich last Thursday and having heard about Rhubarb & Custard a while ago, finally got round to paying their stall a visit.
I was very impressed with their set-up on the market; they had goods baking in their ovens and advised me to come back when the bread was ready. I went back about 3 hours later and there was hardly anything left! I bought the last two baps (brown) and I thought they were delicious. They were 85p for two and they were quite large. They sliced in half easily and the middle was lovely and soft. They had some gorgeous cupcakes, cookies and chocolate torte on sale as well.
I have joined their Facebook page and they always update on their latest creations, which always look and sound very tempting.
Well worth a visit, but I think they only operate on certain days, so probably best to check before going.

Chez Denis, Norwich Posted by Steve on 2/3/2013, 12:36:48 We visited on Thursday 7th February. It was very quiet, so just Denis front of house and one chef. The main reason for coming here was to try the style of food and the menu items were clearly marked whether gluten free, although he marks it c the american way, and spells it celiac. We shared the following, starters: avocat creole & Foie de volaille, mains: Filet Baracuda Cajun and Ecrevisse des amis style. For dessert Teresa had Orange de carib and I had the Crepes suzette (all mine as it had gluten). The main menu is available lunchtime if they have the ingredients to hand. They really know their stuff mainly because they are chefs and use proper ingredients. If there is any doubt they tell you. Chez Denis @ Orford Yard. We checked out the University of East Anglia (UEA) and Norwich last week.
There was quite a large FreeFrom section in the UEA campus shop (all students on campus are self catering). GF is marked on some menu items in the Sports Centre campus. We ate from the all day breakfast buffet a few months ago and were OK. They can provide a GF salad for applicants that are attending on an application open day.
There is a Tesco Express about 1/2 mile away with quite a large FreeFrom section and there is a larger Coop supermarket behind it (which we didn't investigate). There is a large Waitrose with a decent FreeFrom section about 1.3 miles away and an Aldi about 1.3 miles in the other direction (good for crisps and chocolate and cheap wine!). There is a bicycle path from campus to Waitrose and bikes are encouraged.
In Norwich itself, The Gluten Free Cafe provides totally gluten free meals including meat pies, gnocchi, salad (everything is gluten free) and there is a shop selling GF stuff upstairs including fresh crusty bread. We spotted several independent restaurants that had GF marked on the menu and there are many of the usual chains that are good for GF e.g. Nandos, Prezzo, Carluccios, Pizza Hut, Pizza Express, etc
