Isle of Purbeck, Dorset - GF

GF board
First of all, thanks to everyone who came up with some suggestions of where to eat GF in Swanage and the surrounding area. I managed to have some great meals - here's the good, the bad and the ugly!
Chilled Red, 31 Commercial Road, Swanage, 01929 426066
The staff immediately knew what coeliac disease was and what I had to avoid that contained gluten. I could eat EVERYTHING on the menu apart from a couple of starters, one main course and a few desserts. I still had a choice for dessert though. Food cooked from fresh. Top marks!
Tawny's Wine Bar, 52 High Street, Swanage, 01929 422781
The girl I spoke to at Tawny's knew what coeliac disease was and worked at the health shop. Completely on the ball. She wrote on a menu what I could and couldn't have, and suggested changes (ie. frsh crab with rice rather than pasta...). I had plenty of choice and a great meal. www.tawnyswinebar.co.uk/
Ocean Bay, 2 Ulwell Road, Swanage, 01929 422222
I didn't have a chance to eat here, but did go in to enquire. They had a special GF menu for both lunch and dinner. I'm looking forward to trying it next time I go down there. www.oceanbayrestaurant.com/
The New Inn, Church Knowle, 01929 480357
A really welcoming traditional English pub. The couple who run it (Rose and Maurice) have a GF granddaughter. Unfortunately a lot of the options are out as the sauces contain gluten, or they are pies. They are keen to introduce a GF menu though. If you phone ahead they might be able to do something specially. The fish was fantastic there.Worth Tea Shop, Worth, 01929 439368 ...
A visit to the tea rooms is a family tradition. I toke my own GF scones (made to juvela recipe) and they were happy to just charge me for cream and jam. Nothing GF on the premises though!
Manor House Hotel, Studland, 01929 450288
A less promising experience here. I phoned ahead and they assured me that they could cope with GF. We went on Easter Sunday for lunch. The food wasn't anything special, but I had a good choice from the menu. The waiting staff were fairly useless - I even got a piece of bread dropped in my wine glass!!
Grand Hotel, Burlington Road, Swanage, 01929 423353
Went here for a bar meal at lunch time. I couldn't eat anything off the menu. I asked to see the chef who agreed to make me a plain salad with smoked salmon. Not very exciting. The barman didn't know what gluten or coeliac disease was. Best to play safe here!
The Health Shop on Station Road and the Coop both had a good selection of GF food considering that Swanage is a small place.
