Bournemouth Best Western launches Coeliac-friendly menu 14-Oct-08 - Becky Paskin The head chef at Best Western’s The Connaught Hotel in Bournemouth has developed a new menu designed especially for coeliac sufferers after discovering his young son has the disease. Paul James, head chef at Blakes three AA rosette restaurant at the hotel decided it was time to give coeliac sufferers a place to eat out in Bournemouth, after his son, now four, was diagnosed with the disease at the age of two. “My aim is to produce dishes that look and taste as similar as possible to a ‘normal’ diet so that people with coeliac disease aren’t singled out,” he said. “I use gluten free and substitute ingredients to create dishes that aren’t obviously ‘gluten free’. My speciality is the sweet menu as gluten free puddings are often bland and unimaginative and this needn’t be the case.” People suffering from coeliac disease are restricted to eating gluten-free dishes, cutting out all wheat, barley, rye and sometimes oats from their diet. If eaten, the gluten triggers the body’s immune system to attack its own tissue, resulting in significant damage to the lining of the gut. It is estimated that there are one in 100 people living with the disease in the UK. The Blakes menu, which also caters for diabetics and lactose intolerance, now has a range of dishes developed especially for coeliacs, including Ham Hock & Confit Chicken Terrine, served with a Red Onion Chutney; Chicken Forestier, served with a Bacon mash, Asparagus Spears, Carrots and Wild Mushrooms; and Bread and Butter Pudding with a Vanilla Cream and Berries. *************** Best Western Connaught Hotel, West Hill Road, West Cliff, Bournemouth, Dorset, BH2 5PH Tel: 01202 298020 Fax: 01202 298028 www.theconnaught.co.uk/********************* Connaught Hotel, Bournemouth Posted by Charlotte Skinner on 17/11/2008 GF board ….I am the Sales Executive here ….we have a Gluten Free Option for all courses on our menu. Bates Restaurant 350 Charminster Road Fiveways Charminster Bournemouth Excellent lunch there today. I am vegetarian as well as coeliac & had 2 choices for starter, 2 for main & 3 puddings to choose from. I called them before eating there but they did understand re GFD. Think it still good idea to ring first & say you are GF, however. Usually closed Mondays as they do Sunday lunches. www.lookit-up.com/bates.html

We had been shopping and my husband and I decided to give them a go. They couldn't do enough for us. Dorset Wimborne Angel Cafe Posted by christine on 24/8/2009 Gf board Just to let you know that on Saturday we went for a day trip to Wimborne in Dorset and planned to eat in the Angel cafe (East St) ... Unfortunately they no longer have a seperate gf menu and, although they do still sometimes do gf cakes, they didn't have any available as they were all in the freezer??!!? Shakeaway! Posted by Vikki on 23/3/2006 GF board I know this may not apply to those in Bournemouth because I don't know if there's more than the one.. There's a milkshake shop called Shakeaway near Argos in Bournemouth Town Centre and they will make anything into a delicious milkshake. I stopped there a while ago and noted they said they can do GF and lactose free milkshakes!! Having got very excited, I went in and ordered a Cadbury Caramel milkshake. They cleaned all the equipment and surfaces thoroughly before making my milkshake and used soya milk and soya ice cream. They also have a menu which has it clearly noted which items contain gluten! BIG thumbs up to Shakeaway for making life a little simpler and more enjoyable when doing my shopping!! ****************** Shakeaway website and gf list Posted by Bobby on 23/3/2006 They have a website at www.shakeaway.com/ and shops in Bournemouth ~ Southampton ~ Brighton ~ Bath ~ Reading ~ Croydon ~ Kingston

GF board Stayed at The Chine a couple of years ago, on edge of Bournmouth. I emailed them beforehand about GF diet and they arranged a meeting for me with the chef when I arrived. They seemed pretty clued up, told me exactly what I could eat. I was particularly impressed when I chose smoked salmon for my starter on the first night and it appeared with Gluten-free toast. Pleaseant hotel with indoor and outdoor swimming pool and on the cliffs over looking sea (beach at end of garden)

Bistro on the Beach is located on Solent Promenade only 3 miles from Bournemouth and underneath Warren Edge Car Park. It is only a short walk from the car park.
Great attention is paid to creating our monthly menus. We take into account seasonal factors, availability of local produce, innovations within the industry and the input of the whole team. Both traditional and experimental dishes are selected to offer an exciting choice for all pallets. At least 2 starters and 2 main courses are suitable for vegetarians, (dietary requirements can be catered for if discussed in advance e.g. coeliac, dairy free, allergy sufferers).
It's easy to make a reservation at Bistro on the Beach. Remember that the evening Bistro is closed during the winter as we undergo a rebrand. Cafe is open Weds to Sun, 9am - dusk. Telephone 01202 431473

Re: eating out in Bournemouth Posted by Vikk on 18/10/2009,
(saved from GF board )
Bournemouth is slowly getting better for gf.
Wagamama are pretty well aware of gf (they're on Westover Road in Bournemouth town centre) so there are a number of dishes you can eat there. You can check their website and/or ask when you get there.
Corianders is absolutely brilliant. They're on Richmond Hill Road in Bournemouth. The food is incredible if you like Mexican. I especially recommend the nachos and the cheese and spinach enchiladas with rice.
The Bearcross pub (down the road on the Bearcross roundabout near Kinson) is fantastic. Their chef is gf and they have a separate gf menu. The food is delicious. If you're veggie, call in advance and they'll do a gf tomato and cheese veggie pasta for the main course. I'd recommend the baked camambert or garlic muffin to start because they're REALLY good!!
Pizza Hut in Bournemouth and at Tower Park in Poole will both do pizzas if you take your own bases. Never had a problem with them so far and I've had pizzas from there loads of times.
If you can get there, Ma's Pizza and Pasta in Poole town centre have gf pasta and can do some really nice dishes.
Also, for snacky things, if you fancy a real treat - Shakeaway in Post Office Road in Bournemouth are VERY good with gf. They have a separate jug for it and have a list of everything that is gf on their menus. My fave is the double toblerone and dime bar with whipped cream but there's enough to choose from and they're very careful. Quite pricey, but ooooh so worth it! ….
************* Re: eating out in bournemouth Posted by Roland on 18/10/2009
I was in bournemouth at the end of Sept and went to a few places. Harry Ramsdens did me some poached fish and chips (said they were fried separately from fish). Went to ASK and they pulled out a document that said what on the menu was gluten free, I had mushroom risotto. Also went to a Cafe on top of the cliff in Southbourne/Boscombe opposite Fishermans Walk and had a smoked salmon salad.

Oooh easy! Corianders (on Richmond Hill in Bournemouth Town Centre) does the best Mexican food you'll ever have and they have an amazing gluten free menu.
There's also a Wagamama in the town centre on Westover Road, along with a Pizza Hut that should take gf pizza bases if need be.
Oh, and if you fancy it and you get a chance (Corianders doesn't really do desserts gf), there's a Shakeaway in Post Office Road and they do some fantastic gf milkshakes. They're very careful to check everything and use a separate jug for gf shakes.

Bournemouth places that make a celiac vegetarian and his wheat free dairy free wife happy: L'Assiette is the very best, no make that amazing (pre-book a table and let them know your requirements) - www.lassiette.co.uk/ in Southbourne (just round the corner from the roundabout on the coast road with the giant deckchair - makes a funny photo if you sit on it) Beach House Cafe on Hengistbury Spit (across water from Mudeford) does a great veg curry that is GF if a bit too creamy - www.beachhousecafe.co.uk/Urban Reef (forewarn them when booking) by Boscombe Pier will do a risotto if you have not had your fill of those and have GF cookies if you want a cuppa by the sea www.urbanreef.comCafe Riva on the Southbourne cliff top sell Congo Bars from Honey Buns if you want to snack with an amazing view. Larderhouse on Southbourne main street will do a gluten free pizza with prior notice and the toppings are a gourmet experience, staff look very cute in their uniforms and just looking at them makes me laugh - www.thelarderhouse.co.uk/Zoukinis in Westbourne are good and specialise in vegetarian. Their special Thali night has all GF dishes apart from one or two - zoukinis.com/home.htmlOthers that looked promising because vegetarian or gluten free have sadly failed to rise above our mediocre make do mark. Good vegetarian food is the real challenge - GF we find is the easy bit. Bon appetit!
