GF board
Excellent newish cafe in Grasmere (which advertises GF meals and puds outside) also with v good non-GF food in nice modern unfussy setting towards north end of village. Worth finding.
Green's Cafe & Bistro, Grasmere, College Street Grasmere Cumbria LA22 9SZ Tel: 015394 35790 (No website)
I had a lamb 'pie' - just slightly disappointed that the topping was mashed potato not pastry but very good and a nice change from the usual baked potato etc. Slightly mixed level of GF awareness: obviously keen to tap into this market and provide regular daily GF options (and I think diligently & safely), but confused a bit about ingredients like corn flour eg did not know Bird's custard was GF because not aware that allergy labelling means it is possible to work out what's safe. I had an excelllent cider but there was not much interest when I suggested it would make sense for them to stock Green's beer!
The GF puds are from Hunters and very good: www.hunterspuddings.co.uk. I enjoyed the sticky toffee pudding a lot (not too sweet sponge), especially once I had convinced them to add custard. The only problem was that this abnormally huge starch & alcohol filled lunch meant I then slept through a lot of nice scenery!
BTW this small hotel in Borrowdale also looked very good in a wonderful quiet location & base for the N Lakes. I had just had soup (after the previous day's blow out) but would come back to eat and stay as the food looked serious - I'm sure GF would be no problem: www.thelangstrath.com
Called in at Lucy's of Ambleside. The grocer section has moved (as the cafe has expanded) and GF cakes are not longer wrapped, also reduced selection. The choc fudge and quiche portion I had were were both extremely nice but you just have to take it on trust that they don't contaminate: the goods are just on plates alonside others. Again (like last year) a certain amount of arrogance when I asked about this. I enjoyed the quiche in particular but clearly they make so much more from regular baking they can afford to be bit off-hand about selling their GF products.
