Lake District Posted by Sue Grays on 18/7/2005,GF board
I have just got back from the Lake District what a wonderful place. I will definately be going back there. I had a wonderful meal at Lucys in Ambleside. Also bought some cakes to take away with me. I did buy one that was out of date and didnt notice to a couple of days later to my discuss, so I will watch out for this next time. I also went to the Punch Bowl Inn in Askham and the menu was different to the one posted on the support board. They now change the menu every 2 weeks and the were able to adapt my meal to make it GF. I was looking forward to having black pudding for a starter but this was not on the menu. Meal was nice.

Re: Lake District Posted by Theresa - Sunny Keswick on 20/2/2006 GF board I run a Guest House in central Keswick and cater for the coeliac diet. (I have my own special part of the kitchen dedicated to Gluten Free). I do Gluten Free breakfast cereal, GF Sausages and if you don't wish to cart your bread around, you can have some of mine toasted (Lifestyle bread). I'm not doing Evening Meals at the moment, but can recommend several places that cater for us lot including an excellent Italian where about 80% of the menu is gluten free. My website is www.leonardsfieldhouse.com or you can phone me on Keswick 017687 74170. Thanks. BTW I'm not touting for business, just trying to highlight that as a coeliac myself I know how difficult it is to be 100% sure that the food you eat out is uncontaminated! ******************** Re: Lake District From Pat We always stay at The Trout Hotel in Cockermouth (not too far from Keswick). It's the cleanest hotel I've ever stayed in, very nice rooms and the food is always good.

Hello, just back fron the Lake District, had a lovely time just a few degrees too warm for my liking though!!!!!!!!! We went to Lucy:s in Ambleside tried to get in there for a meal on Friday night but fully booked ( this is in Feb ) but got in on Sat night, well what an amazing place the food was five star, menu clearly stating clearly what was gf, and the pudding menu was something else, wuold definately recommend, coming home made a slight detour of about 75 miles to go to the fish & chip shop in Yeadon, Leeds again sooooooooo good to have gf fish in batter with lovely chips, no fuss or bother would really recommend, so now after eating all that food will have to do some jogging!!!! Forgot to say also went to Lakeland Ltd at Windermere and had gf gingercake in the cafe, there was a choice of three gf cakes, wow what a weekend!

Lake District Posted by Julie(Bills wife) on 3/6/2007 GF board
Hello all, just back from a weekend in the lake disrict, stayed at St Johns Lodge in Windermere, good accomodation, good choice of GF for Bill all was well, they seemed to have a good knowledge of gf, cross contamination etc, so at breakfast Bill was dissappointed when the toast arrived in the same toast rack as mine, one slice on either end of it!!!!! So i was then bothered as to wether or not they did understand it fully? What was happening out of site in the kitchen? This morning he had smoked salmon, potatp rosti and poached eggs all along the side of the plate was brown sauce, they were too busy for me to ask what make it was. Went to Lucys in Amble side ……..) had a lovely meal good gf choice again for Bill, he had some lovely bread rolls with his starter, i later asked if i could buy some as he had enjoyed them, thet told me yes, they are in the freezer, i took them out to look at ingredients ( to be nosey as to what flour they had used but hey no ingredients label! ……

I recommend B&B St. John's Lodge in Windermere. Menu has lots of GF options, clearly marked. No fuss at all re. GF provision. Reasonable price. Evening meals in Ambleside. Lucy seems to own the whole town, but Lucy's on a Plate did have several GF choices, and Stamper's, also on Church St. offered a GF restaurant alternative. Lake District generally a good area for coeliacs.

Lakedistrict Posted by Louise O'Connor on 30/3/2008 GF board I am going camping in the Lakedistrict in June , and just wanted to find out if anyone knew anywhere i could go out and eat a gluten free meal ? Or where i could buy gluten free food from Posted by Morag - If you're near to Ambleside then Lucy's is a real treat. She has several places to eat/buy food in the town. There's the restaurant, the deli and the tapas bar - all are brill for GF food and the deli has lots of nice treats to take away. www.lucysofambleside.co.uk There's also Zefferellis beneath the cinema - they do GF pasta Posted by Jocelyn Hi - Boothes supermarket in Keswick stocks the bog standard long life stuff. In terms of places to eat out the Borrowdale Hotel in Keswick were very good, wheat intolerant Maitre De and one of the owners was a coeliac (not sure if they still own it). You can get a gluten free burger in a bun in Rosenthwaite (near Derwent Water), but I think they over did the panicky diet thing because I had no relish, ketchup, onions etc!!!! If I remember the place name I'll post it, but the owners make their produce from their own meat on site. There's quite a few in Ambleside on the supp board. DON'T eat in the cafe near Derwent Water in Keswick next to the theatre - very unhelpful! **************************

Lake District Posted by Andy (Herts) on 13/6/2012, 9:46:20 Just back from a holiday in the Lake District. Thought I would report back though not sure how much of this may be known to folks already. By far and a way the best place I found was Greens Cafe & Bistro in Grasmere (College Street, Grasmere, LA22 9SZ - Tel: 01539 435790) See greensgrasmere.com Greens was fantastic, everything GF was clearly marked on the menu, even a big blackboard outside listing all the GF items together in one place. Staff were extremely knowledgeable and the quality of the food was superb. I opted for the Shepherds Pie and had pear & ginger pudding with custard for dessert. they do a full menu starting with breakfast in the morning and including cream teas - so disappointed not to be able to stay longer and go back there for another meal ! Another good place I found was The Cottage Kitchen in Kendal (28A Finkle Street, Kendal, LA9 4AB - 01539 722468). Small cafe with similar size menu - mains were restricted to Chilli, Lasagne or Fish & Chips. Lots of GF homemade cakes and traybakes. I chose caramel shortbread to takeaway - it was wonderful ! Now wish I'd bought some more ! There was a disclaimer sign with words to the effect of 'please note, while our kitchen is small and handles gluten containing ingredients we make every effort to avoid cross contamination' but I had no reaction whatsoever. The manageress seemed very knowledgeable - she explained they used separate fryer for my fish & chips. I'd been looking forward to finding some GF cumberland sausages on the trip, but failed in this mission despite a number of attempts. Was slightly disappointed in Booths supermarket in Keswick. Asked at butchers counter for GF sausages. Staff directed me to pre-packed section a short distance away but there were none there. To be fair it was the last day of the Jubilee festivities and the whole section was pretty much empty whether GF or not. I did later buy some GF Black Farmer sausages in Booths in Windermere and saw some frozen products from The Gluten Free Kitchen there too (Shortcrust Pastry, Bread & Butter Pudding and Apple Crumble - see http://www.glutenfreefood.info). I'd also read on internet before travelling about a farm shop close to where we were staying which sold GF sausages but unfortunately when we visited there was a sign saying "shop now closed - now selling at ..." and listed a number of markets instead. Even Westmoreland services at Tebay on M6 didn't have any GF cumberland sausages but did have a number of GF items, inc. frozen meals and chilled puddings - including the Hunters Pear & Ginger pudding I'd had in Greens in Grasmere - see www.hunterspuddings.co.uk/acatalog/Pear_Ginger_Puddings.html Hope this info helps others - Andy.

Lake district Posted by charlotte on 22/1/2013 GF board hello all i have just booked to go to the lakes for 4 days in the lake district and am looking for recommendations. its my daughter (aged 3) who has coeliac disease so child appropriate would be good - so nice cakes and italian food would be great! many thanks! ************ lake district Posted by Audrey on 22/1/2013 GF board Does your daughter like fish and chips? www.thewestmorlandgazette.co.uk/news/7991326.Kendal_chip_shop_goes_gluten_free_for_healthier_takeaway/Will your route to the lakes take you anywhere near Appleby-in-Westmorland (A66)? (30 miles from Keswick). A couple of years ago I found a great cake shop here with a big choice of GF cakes - "Taste of Eden". It is a cafe as well. If it is still there, I think it would be coeliac child heaven. There is info on this link. www.sugarvine.com/cumbria/search/restaurant_search.asp?restaurant=40724 Address: 1 Low Wiend, Appleby, Cumbria, CA16 6QP Telephone: 08715 298346 Taste of Eden is just around the corner from the main square, quite near the tourist office and Appleby is a lovely old market town in the Eden Valley. Two places in GRASMERE (recommended to us by a fellow coeliac last year, but not personally tried) Greens Cafe & Bistro - College Street, Grasmere, Ambleside. LA22 9SZ Tel: 01539-435790 Email: info@greensgrasmere.com greensgrasmere.com/menuscat/gluten-free-2/ Baldry's Cafe, Red Lion Square, Grasmere, Ambleside, Cumbria. LA22 9SP Phone: 01539 435301 Review from following site: www.go-gluten-free-wheat-free.co.uk/eatingDetail/ambleside/baldrys-caf_p405.html Tea room in the centre of Grasmere. Baldry's make their own gluten-free white and brown bread, cakes and puddings and are very accommodating to those of a GF diet. The food all seems to be local and they make delicious chutneys and salads, coffees and a range of teas. The bread had a really lovely flavour and texture and it's really nice to see a variety of GF menu options in a traditional cafe. Hope this is of use and that your family has a great holiday.
