Gluten-free foods - local options
This note provides advice to PCTs which are considering taking local action to introduce local
arrangements for the supply of gluten free foods as an alternative to GP prescribing of such
foods.
Which Patients?
NHS supply of gluten-free foods should be for people with established gluten enteropathy. This includes
coeliac disease, dermatitis hepatiformis and steatorrhea due to gluten-sensitivity. There will need to be
some way in which such patients are identified, and their eligibility for NHS supply of gluten-free foods
made clear to those responsible for the supply of these foods.
What Foods?
The Advisory Committee on Borderline Substances has produced an advisory list of gluten free foods
suitable for prescribing by GPs which can be found in Part XV of the Drug Tariff. This could form the basis
of any local scheme, but either a more limited or a wider range of foods and/or brands could be used. The
Advisory Committee's list consists of basic foods and, in particular, excludes foods which attract VAT,
such as chocolate biscuits.
How Much Food?
The quantity of gluten-free foods which a person might consume will vary according to their age, sex,
lifestyle and general diet. No firm advice can be given. However, the aim of providing gluten free food
products is to encourage patients to stick to a gluten free diet and to meet nutritional requirements.
Advice may be available from local state registered dieticians, either for individuals or for
groups/categories of patients.....
... Taste in food is very much a matter of personal preference, and this applies as
much to gluten-free as to other foods.
Nor does the fact that a patient prefers a particular brand at one
point in time mean that they will want to stick with that brand forever.
Furthermore, beyond the staples, patients may wish to vary what they eat from one week or month to the
next. For example, different types of biscuit or different shapes of pasta....
