Ambleside
From Margaret:
I have 2 coeliac daughters aged 6 and 4 and we went to Windermere over the Easter weekend and found 2 fantastic coeliac-friendly restaurants in Ambleside. They're called "Stampers" and "Lucy's" and are both on Church street.
At Stampers the girls had rice cakes with their soup - they could have had GF pasta. At Lucy's there were loads of gluten free things on the menu including puddings - even sticky toffee pudding! it was really refreshing to find somewhere where they knew exactly what gluten free means.

Just got back from a trip to the Lakes, must thank those that recommended Lucy's, it was excellent, so good in fact that after being in for tea and cake (the Hot Chocolate Fudge cake was divine) we booked a table for an evening meal. The menu is clearly marked as to what is GF & vegetarian and there is a wide selection to choose from.

Lucy's of Ambleside: warning
Posted by Charlotte, Oxford on 1/6/2007
A warning about complacency:
During a pit stop in a busy Ambleside on Tuesday I dived into the famous Lucy's of Ambleside to grab a sample 6 or 7 their gluten-free cakes from a wide selection in a basket of wrapped GF products. Back in the car I bit into a Bakewell slice. Finding it rather dull and unalmondy, I turned to see the ingredients (not listed) and realised the label did not say gluten-free (although the packaging was identical). Clearly it had been left in the GF area by mistake. It was of course technically my fault for not checking but I felt that the labelling was misleading. I did phone to complain and got I have to say an unapologetic "you should have checked" answer which did not endear to the company. I felt if I had made that mistake (the first time incidentally in 8 years I have EVER done that and I sample GF products all the time for my research) anyone could have done the same or bought it for another coeliac thinking it was OK.
The problem was really caused by having no ingredients labelled. Apparently this is not a requirement if you are selling the products in your own shop). I normally check labels first - partly out of interest (eg to see if hydrogenated fat etc is used). If there had been an ingredients label I would almost certainly have looked to see what the almond content was on a Bakewell slice since these can be notoriously low (1% in Mrs Crimbles).
The other products were enjoyed by my son and but I was annoyed to be caught out, especially with products that have a good reputation.
It does confirm what I have frequently noticed: that gluten accidents tend to happen when one is complacent: eg in restaurants that advertise gluten-free options so you don't ask the chef about it. In this case my perception of the Lucy's of Ambleside label as a "safe quality GF option" and my enthusiasm to try the products (and greed) made me lazy…..

Just a quick note to let people know of a wonderful place to eat in Ambleside as my partner and I spent a few days there this week. The Doi Intanon Thai Restaurant is owned by Chris and he couldn't have been more helpful in making sure that everything was GF for me.
I was about to steal some of my partner's food when one of the lovely waitresses dashed over and told me off as it wasn't GF!! Service of the highest order, excellent food, and they really looked after me. Pay it a visit if you go.
