Keswick, Lake District: Jenkin Hill Cottage:
"Gained too much weight - the food was so good!"
Date: September 24, 2003
I am a coeliac and Jenkin Hill Cottage was first class. Kelvyn and Christine Sheppard completely understand the need for a gluten-free diet and I trusted them completely. Every food offered to non-coeliacs was offered to me (in a gluten-free form). The house has a warm and welcoming atmosphere and my husband and I settled in immediately.Kelvyn and Christine had thought of everything that we might need and the accommodation was of a very high standard. I would recommend this establishment without reservation.

....my husband and I stayed at Jenkin Hill for a week a few years ago. They have a great understanding of the GF diet They have two very pleasant rooms to let. It was lovely and very reassuring to be able to eat everything that was put in front of me. I trusted them completely.

Lake District
We recently had a weeks holiday in the Lake District and one lunchtime eat at the Brittania Inn at the village of Elterwater. They were extremely helpful towards my Gluten Free diet and made me fish, chips and peas which was ’spot on’.
The menu looks unpromising to start with as lots of it contains pastry but if you ask at the bar they are very pleased to offer you good alternatives.

GF board
.... there are a few restaurants, cafes and pubs that are actually in Keswick - ...
Booths supermarket has a free from section
If you fancy a bit of a drive up to Keswick, there is a superb Italian Restaurant called 'Lucas' 017687 74621- about 90% of their menu is Gluten Free - and that which is not the chef will arrange for a suitable alternative. I have eaten there 3 times now and every meal has been delicious, even when they are busy. They never overbook and give you plenty of time to eat and there is even a choice of about 3 GF desserts. All the staff are well informed about Coeliac and even provide GF breadsticks while you choose your meal. Booking is advisable. Sorry no website.
Another place is a cafe in Keswick - called the Lakeland Pedlar - Veggie, Organic and they offer a number of GF options including nice GF bread from The Village Bakery at Melmerby (which has its own GF kitchen)
www.lakelandpedlar.co.uk/
We spent a day in Keswick on our return journey and had an enjoyable meal in a restaurant called Lemon and Lime in Lake Rd. where the menu in the window is marked to show gf options, and the manager is knowledgeable and helpful.
Keswick : Abraham's Tearoom
George Fisher Ltd., 2 Borrowdale Road, Keswick, Cumbria CA12 5DA
Non-smoking tearoom located inside the George Fisher shop in Keswick, serving snacks and light lunches. Has a gluten-free cake, and can advise as to what other items on the menu are gluten/wheat-free.
Keswick : Mayson's Restaurant
33 Lake Road, Keswick, Cumbria CA12 5DQ
Tel: 01768 774104 Fax: 01768 780512
www.btinternet.com/~maysonsrestaurant/index.html
Serves a wide variety of stir-fry/curry type meals, jacket potatoes, snacks, etc., all cooked in-house so that ingredients are always known. Always something gluten/wheat-free on the menu - staff can advise which dishes are OK. Non-smoking after 12 noon.
When I go out for a meal in Keswick I usually go to Lucas Italian Restaurant where 90% of the menu is Gluten Free. They have the Gluten Free menu clearly marked and is quite separate from the usual menu. They are open Tues - Sunday.
The other place I go to is the Packhourse Pub in Packhourse Court where the chef will adapt any meal you require with Gluten Free sauces
Fishers Walking Shop has a cafe called Abrams and they have a good understanding of Gluten Free and normally have at least one Gluten Free cake on offer. (Open 9am - 5pm)
The Strawberry Cafe on the Main Street do both a Gluten Free brownie and teabread. (Open 9am - 5pm) I have had several good salads/jacket spuds there.
There is a lovely spot in Keswick off the main high street. The best I can do am afraid is mention it is down the alley behind the fudge/icecream shop which is painted marshmallow pink. It's linked to a bike store and you could easily miss it, but they advertise GF meals and say they have regular customers, they did a simple cheese on toast for my daughter which went down swell. Other things they had on the menu were meals and could adapt other meals/snacks. I have only been twice and am not from Keswick, but can't remember what it was called, samll place but very friendly!
>>It's called The Lakeland Pedlar and it's based at Henderson's Yard, Bell Close, Keswick. Tel 017687 74492. It's a wholefood cafe and bike shop and it's lovely (although I haven't actually had any GF food there. You could always give them a ring. ( www.lakelandpedlar.co.uk/ )
