Italy - even better! Posted by Diane S on 29/4/2017 GF board
We're just back from Italy where I ate out every day and didn't get glutened once. Hurrah!
It was interesting that this time, nearly all the restaurants were much more clued-up about cross contamination and insisted on telling me about the risks. Initially I was bothered when I was told that they couldn't guarantee it would be gluten free as there was flour in the kitchen. However they clearly understood the issue, because they'd then say that food was prepared in a separate area, pasta cooked in fresh water etc but they couldn't GUARANTEE it would be gluten free because they had gluten elsewhere in the kitchen..
In several gelaterias, I was warned that they couldn't guarantee 100% that crumbs from cones hadn't fallen into the ice cream - including the one where it was kept in lidded containers!
They were also much clearer on what was and wasn't GF on menus.
Even the owner of our apartment when recommending restaurants, gave me a lecture about some people are just intolerant of gluten but if people were really, very allergic then they should be careful.
Presumably their national coeliac group or similar must have done a publicity campaign because I don't recall anyone warning me about contamination a couple of years ago.
So Italy is getting even better for coeliacs!
