just returned from a trip to lake bracciano area.
supermarkets; Conad (excellent in all large and small branches for specific gf items) Pam (ditto) Carrefour (ok, enough in even a small local branch but not as good)
so much naturally gf food that even if u couldn't find gf specific items u would be able to eat self catering with ease.
gf pasta about £1.50 a bag, DS pizzas at Pam were over 5 euros, as were ds frozen rolls. gf bread about 3 euros upwards depending on shop and type.
crackers, nibbles and biscuits easy to get in all shops. all delish too!
chemists are in every town and all stock gf food like crispbreads, bread, pretzels etc. but very expensive, silly prices in fact.
awareness is v good generally we found. ice cream places generally had some options.
best place we found was in lake bracciano town, minutes from the beautiful castle. gran caffe principe di Napoli, via principe di Napoli. it had gf jam tarts, gf chocs, sweets, beautiful coffee and had 23 out of 24 ice creams that were gf. and cones!! and handled well regarding cross con.
café in campagno di roma (to the left of Carrefour) was a small American diner place. they had a great selection of gf ice creams and cones too. handles well.
on the lakeside right in Angillara town, opposite the little market on the lake side, there was a salad/sandwich bar that had a great range of salads and gelato with cones.
Rome:
Grom ice cream shops all over rome do whole range as gf. fab!
pizza: worth the cost of the holiday for this place alone: Voglia di pizza, via dei giubbonari 33, 00186 roma. about 20 mins from the colloseum (sorry history fans but the pizza will be my biggest memory of rome!!)
we had a gf menu to die for, beer, bruschettas, calzone, pizzas, we ate like pigs. it was the best bit of our holiday by far!!
had researched lots of other places but didn't try them all but if anyone wants any other info just ask.
off topic (and I am in no way connected to these folks) but we stayed at Sellanraa, Campagno di roma, Apartment Due. it was spotless which made home cooking easy. as did all the herbs in the garden and the veg the owners gave us from their kitchen garden. I took 2 wafer thin chopping boards for obvious reasons, toaster bags and that was it and self catering was very easy. would highly recommend the place if u like a quiet holiday and don't mind driving.
DS branded goods: I am just about to write to ds and beg and plead for them to bring over to us the flatbread type things we were buying over there (piadina or something they are called) they g in a dry frying pan for 3 mins and make a folded toasted sarnie, great for breakfasts and for picnics too. and make good pan pizza and garlic breads. I brought a cheap non stick pan over there to cook them in, worth a few euros as we ate a ton of them!! and DS do gf version of oreos too. all available at Pam supermarkets.
Forgot to mention the town of frascati, gf and diabetic restaurant there which we were too early for but gelato available easily and great supermarkets and delis so we made an amazing picnic for our early lunch there.
I just sent a begging letter to DS about the Piadina breads. Fingers crossed!!
