Could someone please put the following review on the Supplementary Board:
Hebden Bridge is a great place for a day out. Attractively situated in the narrow Calder Valley beside a river and the canal, it is full of small shops selling good food, arts and crafts, with no sign of the usual High Street names.
For coeliacs, there is the added benefit of LOVEGROWS (tea rooms and produce shop). It is up a few steps opposite the White Lion pub – though there are a couple of tables outdoors at street level. Opening hours are 10.00 to 4.30, Wednesday to Sunday.
NOTE: The café is CLOSED ON MONDAYS AND TUESDAYS [and also from 15 -25 June, 2014 for holidays].
On the day the café opened, the owner was asked if he had anything gluten free. He didn’t, and he made up his mind there and then that he wouldn’t let anyone down in future. He did his research carefully, learning the importance of avoiding cross contamination, and came up with his present menu, most of which is available gluten free.
Using a supply of GF bread, Lovegrows offers coeliacs home-made soup, salads, croques monsieur/madame, platters of open sandwiches, with continental meats, local ham, cheeses, etc. served with various pickles and mustards. The bread and preserves can be bought to take home.
To follow there is a glorious selection of cakes (half of the selection on display are GF) – all home-made and covered. I first tried the almond and blueberry cake (my favourite) and, later, the iced carrot cake. Mike then let me try a sample of his fruit cake - which is GF, dairy free, fat free and suitable for vegans. While I was there, other cakes were added to the display – a citrus cake (orange, lemon and lime) and a clementine and almond cake. Mike said that by the following day there would be a choice of 7 GF cakes.
The café has a pleasant atmosphere, is spotlessly clean and the service is excellent. Highly recommended!
