********************************* Le Chat Noir, Scarborough Posted by Bobby on 9/2/2008 GF board Le Chat Noir restaurant in Scarborough do gf buckwheat crepes. Marked as gf on the board in the window although not on the actual menus. I had one with cheese and ham - tasted good! I didn't ask about any cross-contamination issues, but they are happy to discuss food ingredients as someone at another table was asking (unrelated to gf) www.lechatnoircreperie.co.uk/ Le Chat Noir Eastborough Scarborough North Yorkshire YO11 1NW United Kingdom Tel: UK 01723 350653 e-mail: lechatnoircreperie@hotmail.co.uk -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Scarborough Italian Posted by Peter (Kates Dad) on 5/6/2009 GF board ... have been to Scarborough last week with the bairns. After much patrolling the chip shops on the Sea Front, found one that sells chips which aren't cooked with battered stuff or used oil from fish frying, its called the Ivy House cafe/take away, near the funfair at the north end of the South bay. Also found a little Italian which sells GF Pasta on request, and said they could adapt the menu to cater for Gf Diet. We had a table booked, but Kate had a non-coeliac tummy upset so had to cancel Heres the Italian. www.tricolos.co.uk/ ********************* Ivanhoe Hotel, Scarborough Posted by Terry on 15/8/2009 GF board As recommended in the supplementary board, we visited last week while on holiday. Had planned to return to the Mehicanna, but found it all closed up. Such a shame as we had enjoyed eating there. So, went to the Ivanhoe instead. Its pretty much similar in feel and apperance to some of the pub chains e.g. Wetherspoons and Brewers Fayre. There is a children's area with lots of toys and a playbus outside. Very family friendly. Both the main menu and children's menu have GF options very clearly marked. Sadly there wasn't much choice for the coeliac vegetarian, a quorn stir fry if you are happy to eat quorn or a jacket potato. However there was a stuffed pepper dish on the specials board. They offered gluten free garlic bread and garlic cheesy bread as well. There was a tasty chocolate fudge cake for dessert as well. Service was excellent. I plan to write to them to congratulate them for their attitude to GF food, but will ask them nicely to consider another veggie choice on the menu. Would go back again without a doubt. ************* Harry Ramsden's, Scarborough Posted by becky t on 28/8/2009 GF board We've just had a lovely few days camping near to Scarborough. After reading about Ivy House Chippy on the supp board we headed there on Tuesday with my daughter very excited only to find it has been refurbished and is now a cafe so we headed off trying to find le chat noir (as recommended on supp board). We did not find it (fortunately as we later found out it was shut at that time of day) but upon seeing the number of fryers harry ramsdens were using I popped in to ask about the chips being gluten free, contamination etc etc. They reassured me that chips were cooked in a separate fryer using only potatoes and veg oil and nothing else, had even heard of gluten free. Chips were delicious. Daughter was absolutely fine - no ill-effects whatsoever. Thursday lunchtime we went back, again I confirmed about contamination etc and bought chips. BUT I spotted a piece of batter in my chips so carefully and against my better judgement checked my daughter's very carefully before giving them to her and picked out everything that could possibly be construed to be batter. (I wish we'd just chucked them! [kicking self emoticon]) My daughter was crying with stomach pain for several hours on the way home, and has been suffering the effects today and will do for at least another week. We are just very glad it happened on Thursday not Tuesday as a glutened child while camping would not be pretty! ...... *********

Gf board
Hi All Got back yesterday and we had a fantastic time we stayed at The Norlands Hotel owned by Frank and Sharon Stickland, Frank is a Coeliac and they couldnt do enough for me i took my own bread as i am sensitive, we had a cooked b/fast every morning and had a choice of 3 meals for the evening meal but we ate out as the meals were between 6-7pm and we found that we wouldnt be back in time for them, the rooms were clean, bright, modern and spacious in fact i dont have one complaint at all we shall definatly be going back, on our 1st night Frank told us of a pub called the Ivanhoe Hotel which do food so we went to check it out and we had 5 mins left to order food by the time we arrived (9.25pm) the guy behind the bar was helpfull and overheard me say to howard 'what can i have thats gluten free' and he said quite a bit because we do gf food!!! i nearly fell off my stool when he said that it was the icing on the cake for me, they were very very helpful from the bar staff to the chefs to the owner, i cant praise them enough, they had a separate section in the kitchen for preparing gf food and they had a separate fryer and nothing was too much trouble and the yorkshire puds were OUT OF THIS WORLD!!! if anyone is thinking of going to Scarborough then these 2 places are the places to go and stay/eat, i found the cafe's on the front hard work so i tended to have a good b/fast and then nothing till the evening meal but thats how i am at home so it wasnt a big deal for me.
We also went to The Magpie Cafe at Whitby and i had a HUGE fish and chips and it was GF i did book it before i went but we turned up an hour early but i only had to wait an extra 10 mins for the fryer to warm up, the meal was fantastic, thats another place that you just HAVE to go to.
All in all i had a fantastic time, i was nervous as it was my 1st trip since going GF but i neednt have worried.

scarborough - the Ivanhoe Hotel Posted by lorraineon 17/7/2005 GF board
Went to Scarborough last week and we went to the Ivanhoe on recommendation on the board, what a difference to order gf without queer looks!!!. altho my son would only eat their chips, but its a start , he did taste their yorkshire puds but that was it (i sneaked a taste and they were lovely), the only draw back was the time it took to cook gf as they dont keep the chip pan !or whatever they use on all the time, although what diff it would make to give gf chips to everyone confused me a bit. they did have a play bus that the kids loved but unfortunately when we went the second time there was a party and they didnt get a chance to play, caused a bit of a flurry with our kids as they had to wait 45 mins for their dinner, however i would definitely recommend it, we are going back next year and i will phone 1/2 hour before going so we dont have to wait

Scarborough IvanWoe Posted by Peter (Kates Dad) on 26/7/2008
GF board
Got back this afternoon from a lovely week in Scarborough.
We had booked into the Ivanhoe pub/hotel for a meal last Tuesday. They seem to have marketed themselves as a GF eatery, so I phoned, explained about my 2 year old having CD, they replied that they did not have a childrens GF menu, but to come along look at the regular kiddies menu, and ask if it could be adapted. I was a tad nervous, and rightly so!
Getting there at 5pm, no-one else was in. I reminded them that one of us was GF, and they said that they would put the fryer on. No problems thus far. Ordered a drink, mine Old peculiar and 2 cokes one for the wife, one for Kate, Harry could share. Asked if they could put the drinks on the bill, yes we could but would need to take my credit card for safekeeping. I asked if they could do GF fish fingers, reply was no! ( despite the local tescos stocking them). I asked what specifically can they do GF.
Reply, stir fry, salad ( obviously not a 2 year olds first choice) or sausages. So sausages it had to be then, hardly a "ask and we will try to adapt" pub.
Now im not expecting a vast GF menu, but FFS at least one option for a GF kiddies meal!
Cutting a long tedious story short, I got ripped off in being charged for 2 pints of coke rather than halfs, my mixed grill steak was overcooked, so was the fried egg, and they forgot the black pudding (bloody criminal that is). Also, partly my fault, they forgot to give me my credit card back, and I had to collect it this morning.
Normally I complain, but the visit to the Ivanwoe was all I was expecting from it, one bloody big disappointment, and not a inexpensive one at that.
I know that some people have had good experiences and I can't dispute that, but from my side of the fence it was a complete disaster.
PS Kate vomited heavily 3 hours after her meal.
I am unsure if she was glutened or not, but the above criticism ensures that we won't be visiting the Ivanwoe EVER again

East Ayton Lodge - nr Scarborough
We went to East Ayton Lodge in Ayton just outside Scarborough for our work Christmas dinner. I rang beforehand and the manager was really knowledgable and helpful. He'd been thrugh the menu with the chef beforehand 'just in case' anyone enquired. They had a range of options that were gluten free and were happy to adapt dishes where possible.
I had poached egg on flat mushrooms, roast turkey with my own gravy, sausage etc and choc orange mousse. They were all delicious and great to be having basically the same as everyone else. Recommended for a Christmas meal!

I Mentioned about this restaurant a couple of weeks ago as we were staying in the area. We decided to have a meal there as it was less than 10 minutes in the car from the caravan site we were staying at. The choice for all the courses was excellent. I had garlic mushrooms to start. The portion was generous and it came with what I am sure was a fibre ds roll that had been warmed. For main course I had the lamb shank and for pudding I had a chocolate brownie. It was all very tasty and it was great to have a pudding that didn't contain fruit! I would go again if I was in the area. When we were paying the bill the manageress mentioned that the owner followed a gluten free diet but wasn't a diagnosed coeliac. They have another restaurant near York.http://www.thecopperhorse.co.uk/menus/gluten-free.html

Posted by Audrey on 22/3/2013, 12:55:07 Nomad Cafe Scarborough Posted by EP on 19/3/2013, 19:32:21 86.160.102.x Had a lovely lunch today in Scarborough at the Nomad Cafe. They had gluten free options of vegetables in a sauce (forgotten the exact name of the recipe), spiced chickpea soup (again forgotten the exact name they gave it). I had scrambled egg on gluten free bread (they said the bread was Genius seeded) it was delicious. They also had various cakes (choc and beetroot, coffee and walnut). I was so full after the eggs on toast (3 slices of bread - I don't usually eat that much bread in one day never mind in one sitting) I didn't try the cakes. I would recommend this cafe as she assured me they cooked all gluten free food separately and had a separate prep area too. Nomad Cafe, 10 Eastborough, Scarborough.
